From the Rehabilitation desk

By Iyyappan Subramaniyan | Managing Trustee

 From the Rehabilitation desk...

Here is a heartening report on how our efforts to improve the quality of life of the children are paying off.

Physiotherapist Kasturi says, two year old Madhavan who endures mild mental retardation was admitted into Sri Arunodayam a year ago. At the time of admission, Madhavan could sit with his back bent. He could not stand or walk. The doctors advised physiotherapy for him three months ago. The rigorous therapy now enables him to crawl, stand without support, and walk a few steps without support! The improvement Madhavan shows is encouraging and we are very happy about it.

Then she talks about two year old Ajith who was admitted into Sri Arunodayam 6 months ago. Ajith endures mild mental retardation and is hyperactive. At the time of admission, Ajith could not move at all. The doctors advised physiotherapy for him four months ago. Physiotherapy now enables him to crawl, stand without support. However he can walk a few steps only with support.

Special Educator Valli is jubilant to share the story of Sophia. Five year old Sophia was admitted into Sri Arunodayam two years ago. She endures severe mental retardation. At the time of admission she could not speak, walk or eat. She always sat in a place and drank only milk. Continuous special education training has transformed her positively. Now she speaks well, walks around and plays with the other children, she can eat solid food – she does not need to be fed, she can wear her dress and the latest development in the academic front is that she can identify pictures!
