FIDA-Uganda will support 700 women in Uganda to access justice and address the justice problems they face, through provision of holistic legal aid services and empowering them economically and socially to sustainably provide for their families. Investing in a woman helps to promote gender equality and strengthens community resilience.
Numerous structural, societal and economic barriers hinder vulnerable women and girls from realising their rights or accessing justice, despite significant progress made by the women's movement to protect and promote women's rights. For example, they are culturally shunned when they report gender-based/ domestic violence and face high levels of poverty which makes them unable to afford the cost of representation or transport to follow up reported cases in the courts of law.
FIDA-Uganda provides free legal aid services to vulnerable Ugandan women facing justice problems. Our lawyers and community legal volunteers support women to resolve their justice problems through legal and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, ensuring that women's rights are protected at all levels. FIDA-Uganda also provides training, advice and legal support to vulnerable women to empower them economically and strengthen their resilience.
The project will directly contribute to strengthening resilience among women and promoting gender equality where women are well empowered to speak out for themselves, fight for their rights and sustainably provide for their families, thus reducing vulnerabilities among women and children.
