Project Overview:

The Diocese of Marsabit, through Caritas Marsabit, has initiated the "Support A Pastoralist Girl Mentorship" program. This initiative aims to empower school-going girls from pastoralist communities in Marsabit, Kenya, by addressing challenges such as early marriages, FGM, and limited access to education. Through mentorship, life skills training, and paretal empowerment, the program seeks to enhance the girls' academic and social development, with a goal to impact 500 girls by 2030.

Objectives:

  1. Mentorship: Engaging and Pairing girls with experienced mentors to provide guidance on personal development and career aspirations.
  2. Life Skills Training: Equipping girls with skills such as leadership, decision-making, and resilience to navigate societal challenges.
  3. Parental Awareness and Empowerment: Educate parents and guardians on human rights, the negative impacts of early marriages, and the importance of protecting children from exploitation. This will include awareness campaigns and workshops to provide knowledge on legal rights and support systems available for safeguarding children against abuse and exploitation.

Progress to Date:

  • The program is currently in the fundraising phase, with an online campaign hosted on GlobalGiving.
  • Approximately $2,795 has been raised out of the target goal of $38,700, leaving a balance of $35,905. This amount has main been raised by our staff and staff of one of our longstanding donar.
  • Initial community outreach and donor engagement efforts are ongoing to raise awareness about the program.

Challenges:

  1. Funding Shortfall: The inability to raise a significant amount of funds has delayed the implementation of key activities.
  2. Donor Appeal Issues: Difficulty in identifying the factors that influence donor decisions and the inability to pinpoint why the program is not attracting significant contributions.
  3. Resource Constraints: Limited capacity to expand outreach and engage with larger networks of donors and partners.

 Future Plans:

  1. Revamping Fundraising Strategies:
    • Conducting donor surveys or focus groups to better understand what appeals to potential contributors.
    • Developing targeted marketing campaigns to highlight the program's unique value and impact.
    • Leveraging storytelling techniques to share compelling human-interest stories that connect emotionally with donors.
  2. Strengthening Community Engagement:
    • Partnering with local leaders and influencers to advocate for the program.
    • Organizing community events to showcase the program's goals and potential impact.
  3. Building Partnerships:
    • Collaborating with organizations and stakeholders to increase visibility and attract funding.
    • Engaging corporate donors and leveraging corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs.
  4. Increasing Transparency: Sharing detailed financial goals, milestones, and potential outcomes to build donor trust and confidence.

Conclusion:

The " Pastoralist Girl Mentorship" program has the potential to transform the lives of girls in Marsabit. However, the current inability to attract significant donor support remains a critical barrier. By analyzing donor motivations and revisiting the fundraising strategy, the Diocese of Marsabit can position the program to achieve its financial goals and make a meaningful impact.
