How we empower children and women in our community

Education program

Education Update

Our education program focuses on early childhood education for marginalized children aged from 5-17, so they can prepare for their future education.

The new academic year started in early February this year. Key achievements are:

210 children enrolled in the program, with 50% of them are girls
146 children are in English and Living value classes
54 children are in Khmer and Living value classes
10 children are in Preschool class
150 children come to the Library daily
6 staff joined social worker training with experts
10 staff development workshop provided for our team

Vocational Training Update

Our vocational training focuses on empowering marginalized women and girls to change their lives through sewing training, soft skill training, mentoring and home sewing business, so they can earn a stable income, and having an independent life.

Currently, there are 26 women in the sewing program, and 10 seamstresses in the sewing business. Key achievements are:

6 women completed from our sewing program, with 100% of them generated additional income to support their families
26 women attended our sewing program
8 sewing skill and 25 soft skill courses were taught to sewing students
6 seamstresses provided capacity building to upgrade their sewing skills
7,000USD were earned through our sewing business and others methods

Community Support Update

Our community development focuses on addressing the most pressing needs in our community by providing and empowering them with resources, knowledge and skills, so they can access to the basic needs and solve the problems by themselves.

Currently, we have home garden program, outreach and opportunity scholarships, staff development scholarships, and community workshops.

Here are the summary achievements:

200 families supported with home garden program
150 children attended hand-washing and teeth-brushing workshop
17 villagers attended high blood pressure and diabetes workshop
500 masks and soaps distributed to our students
57 students supported with opportunity scholarships
1 staff received development scholarships
6 Cambodian youths volunteered in our programs

Women empowerment program update

Covid-19 in Cambodia is under control, so we have reopened our school since November 2021.

14 women have successful completed from our sewing program. It is such a great outcome that all of them have improved their confidence and leadership and used their skills to make their lives better.

Among 12 of them, six have secured employment at an ethical factory and six set up their home businesses and two are public school teachers who will use their skills to teach students.

Through our survey:

100% of them have improved life skills and outlook
92% of them increased confidence and leadership
100% of them have reported a reduction of domestic violence .

Another great news - 21 of our graduated students gained employment at an ethical factory and shops in August during this pandemic. This is great because they can still earn income to support their families.

Currently, there are 32 women participating in our sewing program. Their learning are progressing well.

We would like to share a nice story of our sewing graduate:

Phanny is a single mom of 3-year-old daughter. She stays with her single mother since she got divorce with her husband. She used to work as a cleaner before she joins our program. She really needed a skill in order to get a better income for her family.

She studied sewing skill with us for almost one year. Her dream come true as she has skill and got a better job after graduating. She is now working at an ethical factory, and she is so happy with her new career.

“I am so proud of myself that I can do what I really wish. I am thrill that I have a skill and gain more knowledge through joining the program at Human and Hope Association. The most importantly, I could get a job during the Covid19 outbreak. Now I am able to earn a good income to support my family.”

A nice story of our home garden participant

Meet *Leab - our success home garden participant

A 58-year-old widow woman, Leab is living in poverty who earns less than $2 per day and works very hard to make a living. She has two children and both of them have gotten married, but one is still living with her. She makes rattan baskets to sell and earn around $1.25 per day, but due to Covid-19, she hasn’t received any orders from the buyers, which caused her more troubles on financial and food security.

In early 2021, through the collaboration with the chief of the village, HHA found her and supported with an emergency food pack. Then in May, she participated in our home garden program. Fortunately, her kind village chief has provided her with his free land to grow vegetables temporarily. This has allowed her to grow more vegetables to sell because her own land is not big. After receiving seed, fertilizer and materials from us, Leap has started her garden right away. Not long ago, she started to harvest her vegetables and sell them to a wholesaler in her village. She now can earn a good income which is double compared to before, which gives her a good smile and hope during these difficult times.

“Through attending the program, I received farming materials, fertilizer, and five types of seed such as: salad, sponge gourd, wax gourd, winter melon and mustard green. In addition, I also gained new knowledge on growing vegetables, how to make compost fertilizer and natural pesticide. I am so happy and grateful for your support because now I can earn money to pay my debts and support my family."

We have supported 468 families with home garden todate. Next year 2022, we plan to support 300 more vulnerable families, so please help us to continue our important work.
