How our empowerment program changed women's lives

Congratulations to our women who achieved their dreams after graduating from our sewing skills, life skills, and mentoring courses. In mid-January 2021, there were 11 students who completed our program. Eight students work at the tailor shops and an ethical factory, four set up their business at home.

Although it was a complicated year due to the Covid-19 outbreak, we still manage to train and certify our sewing students. We provided each student a bottle of liquid soap and several face masks for them and their families to use for prevention. Moreover, we are really proud of our sewing students who attended the class regularly even we didn’t provide them petrol allowance because we didn’t have enough funds to afford it.

Major Achievements

98% is our average attendance rate in the classes
100% of domestic violence is decreased
83% of students generated additional income from sewing
100% of women have improved life skills and outlook
91% of women increased in confidence and leadership
100% of students and teacher passed the assessment survey

A nice story of Srey Ka

Srey Ka was born into a big family which consists of ten members. She stopped studying in grade nine because she couldn’t catch up with the lesson well. She got married at the age of 21, and she has five years old son. She went to work as a service for a few years. Then she decided to join a sewing class at an organization, but she gave up her skill because she needed to take care of her small son.

She wanted to learn this skill again, so she asked us to join our sewing program. She just graduated from our sewing course, and she got a job to work as a seamstress at a tailor shop.

I have a job when I graduated from my sewing course, so I can earn a good income to help my family. Moreover, I gain some knowledge that is helpful in my living. A nice story of our home garden participant

Chantrea and her gardens

Meet *Chantrea, one of our home garden participants

A 68-year-old, Mrs. Chantrea (given name) has a big member of eight people in her family, including her husband and her six children. All her children had gotten married and lived separately. Five of her children live in other provinces. She lives in a small house with her 75-year-old husband who has got sick for many years. Their livelihood relies on their children’s support, but due to COVID-19, many of their children lost their jobs, which caused them into financial crisis. However, besides the support from her children, Chantrea doesn’t keep her time free, she has grown some kinds of vegetables at home for eat and sell some to her villagers.

With our collaboration with the chief of village, we found Chantrea and told her about our program. Chantrea was really happy and eager to participate in our program because she can learn new technique of gardening and expand her garden. She could not join the training at HHA center; however, our staff has shared some new technique with her at home such as land preparing and how to make compose fertilizer and natural pesticide. She received five types of seed such as Chinese kale, Long bean, Morning glory, Bok Choy and Winter melon.

After receiving seed, she didn’t wait to start her gardens. She has grown Chinese kale, Long bean, Morning glory and Bok Choy. After just two months, she harvested her Morning glory and Bok Choy and soon after will be her Long bean and Chinese Kale. She can have nutritious meals with these vegetables and also earn some money from selling. Chantrea is one a great gardener we love to work with.

COVID-19 Responses and Achievements

Online teaching

We are happy that Cambodia’s control over the spread of COVID-19 and prevention to date of community transmission has been a remarkable success. This part of success is due to the important work of the COVID-19 preventative intervention of NGOs that has supported the Royal Government. However, COVID-19 still has had a devastating impact on the economy in Cambodia, especially people in Siem Reap who their livelihoods rely on tourism. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their jobs, and these job losses have pushed a lot of people into deep poverty and hunger. At Human and Hope Association we are committed to getting through these tough times and supporting our community in whatever way they need.

Due to school closure, our team is flexible to run online classes, giving homework and drop-in sessions for our children, so they can still continue learning. Our sewing class still continue running as we only have six students per class with the preventative measure in place.

Since May 2020, we have initiated three interventions to address the impact of COVID-19 in our community: 1) Tuk Tuk hygiene outreach 2) Emergency Food Relief Packages, and 3) Home Food Garden.

Here are our achievements to date:

15 days of tuk-tuk hygiene outreach conducted, which 26,000 people reached
550 soap distributed to rural community members
3,500 reusable face masks distributed to rural community members
321 food packages distributed to poor households
68 poor households supported with home food garden project
250 children have still joined our educational classes through online classes, homework handouts, and drop-in sessions.
60% of our children have accessed to our online classes
5 women completed from our sewing class
14 women have still joined our sewing class
