Summary

Silkroad's Global Musician Workshop (GMW) is a tuition-free musician training program modeled after the formation of the Silkroad Ensemble that brings together artists from around the globe to Boston, MA for a week of cross-cultural musical collaboration under the guidance of world-class faculty. Participants build lifelong relationships, co-create bold new musical works, and develop skills to share music as a resource for understanding, culminating in a five-day public Performance Festival.

Challenge

Is cross-cultural collaboration still possible these days? Even amid globalization, musicians around the world often express feeling siloed from other artistic genres and traditions. Spaces for musical collaboration and training across cultures and pathways to relationships with global peers can be limited, and often comes at a high price. Silkroad provides an accessible space for over 70 musicians from diverse backgrounds to meet and learn from one another and stellar faculty, tuition-free.

Solution

Silkroad's Global Musician Workshop offers tuition-free training in styles of music that represent a wide range of backgrounds and traditions through faculty-led bands, group workshops, topic-based elective classes, nightly jam sessions, and a multi-night Performance Festival. Participants learn from one another through the creative process and gain access to a network of peer musicians from around the world, launching new opportunities for collaboration throughout their professional careers.

Long-Term Impact

GMW is not just a workshop, but a catalyst for change and celebration of culture. A shining example of this can be seen in a participant who returned home after the workshop and created a similar program in his own country. What started as one week of learning became a sustainable, community-led initiative in an entirely new part of the world. Silkroad is currently organizing a growing network of training programs (such as its newest program in Hangzhou, China) to expand its global impact.
