This is a case study of Esther Ruth, a 15 year old orphan girl child in primary 6, heading a household of two orphans and a blind old grandmother in Kadoto Ward, Kadoto A Cell in Bulangira town council – Kibuku district. Both parents died leaving her with two sisters (Grace in P.5 and Fina in P.4) and a blind old grandmother staying miserably, the hard conditions Esther Ruth was living in; forced her to drop out of school to engage in child labour for family survival. Kagumu Development Organisation (KADO) identified Esther Ruth when she was at somebody’s garden doing garden work. She was invited to KADO offices where her family background was recorded, this attracted the project to include her among the project beneficiaries. She was mentored and trained in goats rearing, returned her and the two sisters to Matakokore primary school and provided them with scholastic materials. The Hilden Charitable Fund project support given to Esther Ruth, has given her confidence to manage the family. She is able to sell some goats and do crop agriculture at household level, to secure incomes to buy scholastic materials, treat the blind grandmother and the sisters.
Esther Ruth has become an example to other orphans who may wish to drop out of school and engage in un profitable ventures, she vow to read hard and become a medical personnel, support the sisters to achieve their education careers.
This case study signifies a true story of how an orphan headed household live in Uganda and explains what Kagumu Development Organisation is doing to enhance Education of orphan girl children.
