In AFRYDEF, we see children and youths as assets, and do our best to encourage them develop their full potentials. The above project is aimed at providing 5 toilets/bathrooms and medical care for the 300+ children at the Special Education Center, Imo State, Nigeria. To achieve these, we shall engage 5 nurses and 5 care givers at the center to provide medical care and support to the children, including cleaning their beds, cutting their hairs/nails as well as take care of their sanitary needs.
Our brief intervention at the Center, between 2016 and 2017 revealed that those children with learning disabilities resident at the center are not well taken care of by the attendants employed by the State Government. At the center, we discovered that most of the dormitories do not have good toilet facilities. In addition to inadequate sanitary facilities, they lack access to basic medical services and several casualties and medical emergencies have been recorded as a result.
We shall build 5 new toilets and 5 bathrooms for the 300+ children resident at the center and engage 5 nurses and 5 care givers to take care of them for the first one year. The nurses shall provide regular medical checkups and treatments for the children as well as attend to emergencies. The care givers shall take care of the personal hygiene needs of the children, such as bathing them, cutting their hairs and nails, cleaning their bed sheets and dormitories, washing their clothes, etc.
We expect that at the end of the project, the lives and health conditions of these children would have improved tremendously. The provision of 5 new toilets and bathrooms would also improve the conditions of the school environment and prevent outbreak of diseases, such as diarrhea, cholera, toilet infections, etc. The above impacts, including the love and care that the nurses and care givers would show them will also improve their growth, learning conditions and overall academic performances.
