Summary

In AFRYDEF, children, youths and women are seen as assets and resources, and thus encouraged to develop their full potentials. Therefore, this project is aimed at providing 5 toilets and medical care for 300 mentally retarded children at the Special Education Center, Imo State, Nigeria. We shall engage 5 nurses and 5 care givers at the center to take adequate care of the children, including cleaning of their hostels, cutting their hairs and nails as well as take care of their sanitary needs.

Challenge

Our brief work at the Special Education Center, Orlu, Imo State, between 2016 and 2017 revealed that these mentally retarded children resident at the center are not well taken care of by their attendants, who are employed by the State Government. At the center, most of the hostels do not have good and enough toilet facilities. In addition to inadequate sanitary facilities, they lack access to basic medical services and several casualties and medical emergencies have been recorded as a result.

Solution

Through this project, we shall build additional 5 new toilets for the 300 children resident at the center and engage 5 nurses and 5 care givers as permanent staff to take care of them for the first one year that this project would last. The nurses shall provide regular medical checkups and treatments for the children while the care givers shall take care of their personal hygiene needs, such as bathing them, cutting their hair and nails, cleaning their bed sheets, washing their clothes, etc.

Long-Term Impact

We expect that at the end of the project, the lives and health conditions of these children would have improved tremendously. The provision of the 5 new toilets would also improve the conditions of the school environment and prevent outbreak of diseases, such as diarrhea, cholera, toilet infections, etc. The above impacts, including the love and care that would be shown them by the nurses and care givers will also improve their learning conditions and overall academic performances
