This project will give psychological, social, and economic support as well as occupational therapy to 218 Colombian children with cancer and their families. SANAR NINOS CON CANCER Foundation will also solve access barriers to health services and create adherence to treatment by providing tools to better understand and manage the disease.
In Colombia, childhood cancer is the second cause of death in children. The health system poses many administrative barriers to accessing comprehensive care promptly and these children belong to poor and vulnerable families with many economic limitations. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has made things more difficult. SANAR's challenge is to support these children and their families so that they can adhere to the treatment and overcome the disease.
The SANAR NINOS CON CANCER Foundation will give psychological assistance and education, occupational therapy such as reading and art workshops, playful encounters, and celebration of special dates, as well as economic aid for transportation, food, and accommodation. It will also contribute to medicines, monitoring, hygiene kits, and funeral expenses for families who require it due to their condition of poverty and vulnerability. We will also advise them on their health rights.
The child and family assume the healing path with greater commitment, dedication, and empowerment, and economic and social barriers will be overcome to achieve the best possible result. Through various therapeutic activities, the disease will be redefined: "Cancer is limited, it does not erode love, it does not destroy hope, it does not undermine faith, it does not compromise peace, it does not erase memories, it does not diminish courage, nor does it invade the soul, or silence the spirit.
