Summary

Adolescents account for 20% of new HIV infections in Kisumu, with HIV prevalence significantly higher among girls who have been pregnant. The project will support 1000 pregnant and breastfeeding adolescents aged 12 - 19 years return to school after delivery to continue with their education. This will be achieved through providing psychosocial counseling, support with school fee payment, buying of school materials, and provision of menstrual management products to ensure they do not miss school.

Challenge

Teenage pregnancy & early marriage are the leading causes of new HIV infections among youths aged 12 - 19 years. Young girls in Kisumu due to socioeconomic vulnerabilities are exposed to transactional sex for basic school items i.e. menstrual products, school fees etc. This has resulted in high numbers of teen pregnancies, with statistics indicating higher new HIV incidences among the girls. These challenges perpetuate cycles of interrupted education, economic dependence, and health inequities.

Solution

The project will identify 1000 pregnant and breastfeeding adolescents who have dropped out of school. Then support them to return to school by drafting an individual return to school plan. Paying school fees, providing menstrual products, and learning materials to support quality education access. To ensure the girls are supported to stay in school, the project will engage mentors to do weekly follow-up and share challenges they face in attending school regularly.

Long-Term Impact

The project will transform the lives of 1,000 adolescent girls by breaking the cycle of poverty through education. Ensuring their return to school and providing dedicated mentorship directly boost academic performance and future economic opportunities. This empowerment fosters confidence and leadership, enabling them to make informed life choices. The resulting ripple effect strengthens entire communities, promoting gender equality, improved public health, and sustainable economic growth.
