This project helps provide medical treatment and support for 1000 streets mental health patients in Ghana, by building rehabilitation centre and also providing physical support, counselling, financial support,stigmatization education and promoting social inclusion.
According to Dr Akwasi Osei, the Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority,Ghana has over 4 million mental health patients. Recent times,the number of innocent and vulnerable people killed and rape by mentally challenge persons in Ghana,has been on the ascendency. There are several cases of male mentally- challenged persons impregnating their female counterparts,thus adding to the number of streets children. This project will affects 1000 mental health patients on the streets.
MEMHREP provides consistent medical treatment for the patients,feed,bath and cloth mentally-ill patients on the streets, have 5 psychiatric nurses who are paid to take care of the patients. The 82 Volunteers of the NGO, apart from providing occasional needs to the clients - i.e foodstuffs, and clothing, among others, also visit homes, take the patients to the nearest partnered psychiatry unit for swift recovery.
This project will treat and supports 1000 mental health patients by providing them with all the basic essentials i.e providing food,clothes,medical treatment,rehabilitation centre,stigmatization education etc. Early data show that the program has had a remarkable impact,the project has saved the life of a four-month-old baby dumped in a pit by her mentally-ill challenge mother. MEMHREP has save persons who were on the verge of completely loosing their mind through it community health programs.
