This project will strengthen 20 existing Village Savings and Loan Associations (AVECs) in Nyiragongo Territory and the outskirts of Goma. Each AVEC has 25 members, including women, older persons, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable people. The project will provide seed capital for revolving loan funds, enabling members to restart or expand income-generating activities, increase savings, access affordable credit and improve household resilience.
The closure of financial institutions and banks in areas affected by the crisis has severely limited access to savings, credit and financial services. Vulnerable people, especially persons with disabilities, older persons and women traders, have lost opportunities to finance businesses, education, agriculture, housing and healthcare. Although 20 AVECs have been created, their limited capital prevents them from meeting members' credit needs and restarting income-generating activities.
The project will provide seed capital to 20 existing AVECs, each with 25 members, creating revolving loan funds that members can access to restart or strengthen income-generating activities. The AVECs will continue mobilizing regular savings, issuing small affordable loans and recovering repayments for further lending. Priority will be given to vulnerable members, particularly persons with disabilities, older persons and women.
The project will establish sustainable community-based financial mechanisms that remain operational beyond the project period. Revolving capital will allow AVEC members to repeatedly access loans, invest in businesses and increase household income. Regular savings will progressively grow the funds. The initiative will strengthen economic inclusion and resilience, particularly for persons with disabilities, women and older people, while revitalizing local economic activity.
