We want to tell you a story of a little girl. Intombazanyana okuthiwa Ayesha othanda izithelo kanye nonina . Uma unina Ayesha yambuza yini umama do, waphendula - Mothers ukwakha amabhuloho. This not a technical error. Imagine if this was your first day of school. For 1.2 Million children in Jharkhand, India, it is. Language is one of the biggest reasons children drop out of school between Grade 1 & Grade 3. We want to make 21 gorgeous story cards in 9 tribal languages.
Children grow up speaking one language at home, often a tribal language, and then go to their first day of school which will be in another language. Right now, language is one of the biggest reasons children drop out of school between Grade 1 & Grade 3.
We want to change that. We want to make 21 gorgeous story cards in 9 tribal languages that will empower the poorest of kids to learn how to read, in their own language. The Government of Jharkhand has said YES. If we can raise the funds we need to design the 20 story cards and write them in 9 Tribal languages, and well as print them.
The Government commits to send the story cards to 38,000 nursery schools [anganwadis]. We will inspire 100,000 storytellers, elders in villages, to go to school once a week to read stories to children. Children on their first day of school will read and learn in a language they understand.
