KASO is working to eliminate new HIV infections among children and keep their mothers healthy and alive in rural villages in Malawi: Through building individual and community capacities to promote and deliver Prevention of Mother- to- Child transmission of HIV-PMTCT services, encourage health seeking behavior, improve women's and girls' knowledge of and access to Sexual Reproductive Health- SRH services, combat gender based stigma and discrimination and reduce unintended pregnancies.
Mother- to- Child Transmission constitutes roughly 40% of all HIV infections in Malawi. This means 40,000 children born infected with the HIV virus every year. Without integrated interventions at the family and community levels, one third of these children will die before their first birthday. Despite these facts, women and girls of child bearing age are still denied HIV/AIDS, PMTCT and SRH services and made more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS and its devastating impact, due to gender inequality.
Through capacity building, advocacy and community education: We will create empowerment in PMTCT and SRH for women and girls who will lead a grassroots movement to eliminate new mother to child HIV infections. Communities will be much better equipped to promote and deliver sustainable PMTCT and SRH change. By empowering women and girls of child bearing age with PMTCT and SRH information we will generate demand, improve access and directly reduce new HIV infections among children.
By 2016, KASO will: Improve access to PMTCT, ART and SRH and eliminate new HIV infections among children; build individual and community capacities to be able to enjoy SRH and wellbeing, be able to make informed choices and decisions about their families and health and create community empowerment enabling women and girls to change their life, communities and our society.Communities will be empowered to move towards eliminating new HIV infections among children and keeping their mothers alive.
