375 Tons Removed From 2 Coastal Sites in Accra

By Team Mayekoo | Project Lead

Over the past several months, Mayekoo has worked alongside volunteers, schools, community leaders, donors, and partners to deliver practical beach cleanup projects across multiple sites. Between April and May 2026, Mayekoo led major coastal restoration interventions along the Chorkor–Chemuena coastline and at Ananse Beach in Nungua, both within Accra. Together, the work:

removed 375 metric tons of waste

mobilized 421+ volunteers

restored 900 meters of shoreline

The results showed what coordinated action can achieve—and why lasting coastal restoration requires machinery, hauling, monitoring, community stewardship, and systems that stop waste from returning.

What Comes Next at Ananse Beach

The large-scale restoration at Ananse Beach was an important step, but it was not intended to be the end of the work.

Mayekoo and Krowor Municipal Assembly developed a year-long program built around regular community cleanups, environmental education, youth participation, and stronger local stewardship.

The aim is to move from periodic interventions toward a more consistent Coastal Adoption Model—one that can be refined and adapted with local partners in other coastal communities across Africa
