An alarming 120 million girls and young women worldwide have suffered some form of sexual abuse! Let us start to combat child abuse on the ground in Bolivia. 'Casa Minka' therapy center in the capital city of La Paz provides vital support for children to overcome their traumas, fostering an environment where they can learn and play in a protected setting.
Child abuse can manifest in various forms: domestic violence, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse, including rape. Consequences of child abuse are profound: Abused children often withdraw from family and friends; Many abused girls become teenage parents at an early age; A significant number of abused children develop substance addictions; Child abuse contributes to mental health problems, such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder which may lead to suicidal attempts.
'Casa Minka' provides a secure space for 200 children aged 6 to 18. On a daily basis, around 30 children actively engage in either group therapy sessions with their family members or receive individual psychological therapy. Additionally, the center provides alternative therapy options, including activities like art and music therapy, yoga and meditation, self-defense classes, and sports, expanding the range of holistic approaches to support the well-being and development of the children.
Providing crucial support to children who have experienced abuse, offering meaningful activities, and creating a safe space free from violence are essential components for healthy development. The medical and therapeutic assistance offered not only helps children in overcoming their challenges but also plays an important role in nurturing their self-esteem and laying the groundwork for a better future, including their education and health.
