Digital Skills for Disadvantaged Children in China

By Sebastien Carrier, Ph.D. | Program Director

After many difficult years, 2023 has been very active and successful for us. Thanks to our partners, donors, and volunteers, our digital literacy and life skills program has experienced a significant increase in enrollment, reaching disadvantaged students in six Chinese provinces (Shanghai, Henan, Jiangxi, Fujian, Shaanxi, and Anhui).

In the sole spring semester of 2023, we have provided lessons to 796 students, which is our highest number for one term since the inception of the program in 2016. The summer term has also brought another 492 students to the program. Our volunteers and teachers delivered an impressive total of 1,156 online or offline lessons so far.

During the summer term, our students used our newly developed Scratch materials, enhancing their interest and skills in graphical programming. We also continued to offer social-emotional training, classes in embedded system design (Micro:bit), and three thematic lessons on computer basics for children in remote areas. In these lessons, students gained an understanding of fundamental concepts such as what a computer is, program software, and basic principles of internet security. This knowledge equips them better to face the challenges of the information age.

On July 15th, sponsored by Texas Instruments, we led two teams to participate in the global LEGO FLL STEM competition. During the competition, the children overcame a challenging start, reversed the score, and successfully completed tasks that were not covered in their regular classes. Their innovative energy presentation received recognition from the competitor’s judging panel, earning them a commendable placement. One of the teams even received an invitation to participate in the national competition in Macau.

As the fall semester is now underway, we are very excited to have welcomed new students across China. More than 700 students are currently enrolled in our program.

It goes without saying that none of this would be possible without the efforts and dedication of all of our volunteers, donors, and other supporters. Thank you all for your support!
