Meet Amina – The Girl Who Dreamed of Building Robots
In the quiet hills of Kibaale District, 14-year-old Amina used to spend her evenings drawing imaginary machines in the sand with a stick. She had never touched a computer, never seen a robot—only heard about them on a crackly radio at her grandmother’s shop. Her dream was to become an engineer, but in her rural school, science stopped at theory and imagination.
That was until Rural Smiles Foundation began talking to her school about STEM education and the possibility of building a Technology Access Centre (TAC) in their community.
When we visited Amina’s school during our early engagement sessions, she was the first to ask, “Will girls also be allowed to build robots?” Her question wasn’t unusual—but it showed us just how wide the gap is between dreams and opportunity in communities like hers.
What We’ve Done So Far
Thanks to GlobalGiving’s platform and your trust, we’ve launched our campaign to raise $135,000 to make dreams like Amina’s possible. While we’re still in the early fundraising phase, momentum is growing:
What we don’t have—yet—are the funds to bring this plan to life. But we have the passion, the people, and a growing list of girls like Amina, ready to trade their stick drawings for software simulations.
Why This Matters
In Uganda, rural students are often left behind in the digital revolution. Without access to practical skills in coding, robotics, and data science, they remain trapped in a cycle of poverty and limited opportunity. Through this project, we’re not just building a centre—we’re building futures.
Imagine hundreds of students like Amina being introduced to a laptop for the first time, printing their first 3D design, writing their first line of code. Imagine them becoming innovators in their communities, solving problems we haven’t even thought of yet.
How You Can Help
We invite you to share Amina’s story and this project with your networks. If you’ve already donated, thank you—your gift is the first line of code in a much bigger program of change. If you haven’t yet, or would like to give again, now is the time. Every $25, $50, or $100 brings us closer to opening the doors of the Technology Access Centre.
Let’s not let Amina’s dream stay in the sand.
