STEAM Team Summer Scholars

The LEAD Coalition of Bay County’s STEAM Team Summer Scholars Program successfully met and, in several areas, exceeded the program goals by providing meaningful summer enrichment opportunities for underserved youth in Bay County. The program created safe, engaging, and educational experiences that supported both academic growth and social-emotional development for participating students.

The program’s primary goals included increasing access to affordable summer enrichment, exposing students to STEAM-related learning experiences, strengthening social and communication skills, improving student confidence, and reducing summer learning loss. Through the support of grant funding and community partnerships, the program exceeded expectations by offering a wider range of activities and enrichment experiences than originally anticipated.

Over the course of the five-year program, 41 unduplicated students participated in STEAM Team programming. Students engaged in hands-on activities including coding, robotics, drone-building, arts enrichment, swimming instruction, educational camps, career exposure opportunities, and community-based learning experiences. Many participants visited places and explored career pathways they had never previously encountered.

The summer camp scholarships provided access too high-quality summer opportunities that would otherwise have been financially out of reach. Parents benefited from having a safe, structured environment for their children during the summer months while students benefited from positive mentorship, enrichment, meals/snacks during activities, and increased exposure to educational and career possibilities. The program also reduced barriers related to cost and access that often prevent underserved families from participating in summer learning experiences.

Several outcomes demonstrated strong program effectiveness:

• Increased student confidence and willingness to try new experiences
• Improved communication and peer relationship skills
• Expanded student interest in STEAM subjects and career pathways
• Increased parent engagement and satisfaction
• Continued multi-year participation from families, including siblings joining the program after seeing positive outcomes with older children

One particularly meaningful outcome was the strong retention and family referral pattern within the program. Students such as Brian, Oscar, Ruby and Brianna became returning participants or inspired siblings to enroll in subsequent years, demonstrating the trust families placed in the program and the positive experiences students had.

Program effectiveness was measured through:

• Parent feedback conversations and surveys
• Behavioral and confidence observations during activities and group interaction

Parent testimonials consistently described the program as a “safe space” where children felt supported, encouraged, and inspired to learn. Students reported increased confidence in reading, communication, teamwork, and trying new activities. Staff also observed measurable social-emotional growth in students who became more comfortable interacting with peers, participating in group activities, and expressing themselves over the course of the program.

Overall, the STEAM Team Summer Scholars Program demonstrated that strategic investment in youth enrichment produces lasting benefits not only for students, but for families and the broader community. By creating opportunities for underserved children to learn, connect, and grow, the program helped strengthen community resilience and expand pathways for future success.
