Hello dear donors, thank you for always supporting the purpose of Geek Girls LatAm to connect girls, youth and women with opportunities in the areas of science and technology and their appropriation of digital knowledge.
We are convinced that small actions change the world, that is why last month, through a volunteer activity, Geek Girls LatAm was present in Isla Fuerte, located in the Colombian Caribbean, to meet LAS FUERTES .
The LAS FUERTES project, founded by Karol López, Colombian, Master in Public Health, has been created as an empowerment and leadership tool for girls and adolescents from Isla Fuerte. This project seeks to stop the issue of menstruation from being a taboo and an obstacle for them.
In addition to the training that these girls receive in relation to their menstrual health, Geek Girls LatAm brought its APPROPIA methodology, for the social appropriation of digital skills to the island, impacting the lives of the participating girls through a workshop aimed at taking advantage of Internet and digital tools.
Despite the fact that most of the girls on the Island do not have their own digital devices and on the Island the internet connection is not very good, the Geek Girls LatAm methodology, facilitated by our Big Sister Lorena Carvajal, allowed them to appropriate technological concepts, interact with the computer brought to the workshop, and also open their minds to possibilities that the digital world has.
In Lorena's words "during this workshop, Las Fuertes took away the desire to learn English through Duolingo, to further explore the digital libraries available on the Internet, as well as to discover powerful women online like Malala"
These days of appropriation and inspiration allow us to connect with the girls and adolescents who need us the most, forging ties of collaboration where digital skills are part of the empowerment and leadership processes to promote a generation of STRONG and courageous girls.

Hola queridos donantes, gracias por apoyar siempre el propósito de Geek Girls LatAm de conectar a las niñas, jóvenes y mujeres con oportunidades en áreas de ciencia y tecnología y su apropiación de conocimiento digital.
Estamos convencidas que pequeñas acciones cambian el mundo, por eso en el mes de Agosto, a través de una actividad de voluntariado, Geek Girls LatAm estuvo presente en Isla Fuerte, en el Caribe colombiano a 75km de Monteria, Cordóba, para encontrarse con LAS FUERTES.
El proyecto LAS FUERTES, fundado por Karol López, Colombiana, Máster en Salud Pública, ha sido creado como una herramienta de empoderamiento y liderazgo para las niñas y adolescentes de Isla Fuerte. Con este proyecto se busca que el tema de la menstruación deje de ser un tabú y un obstáculo para ellas. En complemento a la formación que estas pequeñas reciben en relación a su salud menstrual, Geek Girls LatAm llevó su metodología APROPIA, para la apropiación social de competencias digitales a la isla, impactando la vida de las niñas participantes mediante un taller orientado a sacarle provecho a Internet y a las herramientas digitales.
Pese a que la mayoría de las niñas de la Isla no cuenta con dispositivos digitales propios y en la Isla la conexión a internet no es muy buena, la metodología de Geek Girls LatAm, facilitada por nuestra Big Sister Lorena Carvajal, permitió que ellas apropiaran conceptos tecnológicos, interactuaran con el computador llevado al taller, y además abrieran su mente a posibilidades que el mundo digital tiene.
En palabras de Lorena "durante este taller, Las Fuertes, se llevaron las ganas de aprender inglés mediante Duolingo, de explorar más a fondo las bibliotecas digitales disponibles en Internet, así como descubrir mujeres poderosas en línea como Malala"
Estas jornadas de apropiación e inspiración, nos permiten conectar con las niñas y adolescentes que más nos necesitan, tejiendo lazos de colaboración donde las competencias digitales hacen parte de los procesos de empoderamiento y liderazgo para impulsar una generación de niñas FUERTES y valientes.
