Over the last three months, our community demonstrated extraordinary compassion and solidarity as families across our region felt the effects of the government shutdown. Many survivors and vulnerable households faced immediate hardship — particularly related to food insecurity, inability to afford household essentials, and increased financial stress. Thanks to the generosity of our community and supporters on GlobalGiving, we were able to respond quickly and meet urgent needs.
As the shutdown stretched on, local individuals, businesses, churches, and partner organizations came together in a powerful way. Community members donated:
Food and pantry staples
Grocery store gift cards
Household and personal-care items
Cleaning supplies
Baby products, including diapers, wipes, and formula
These donations allowed us to provide rapid, tangible support to survivors and families who were struggling. What could have been a period of crisis instead became a demonstration of community care. For many survivors of sexual violence, ongoing support with basic needs plays a crucial role in maintaining safety, housing stability, and overall wellbeing. These donations helped reduce stress, prevent retraumatization, and ensure families did not have to choose between food and other essential expenses.
The shutdown created a surge in basic-needs requests that exceeded our typical monthly numbers. Rising costs of food and essential items added additional strain. While community donations helped meet these needs, the demand highlighted the importance of maintaining a flexible support fund for future emergencies.
We continue to build partnerships and prepare for long-term support as families recover financially. Your contributions through GlobalGiving are essential to ensuring no survivor or family is left without help during moments of crisis.
We are deeply grateful to our GlobalGiving donors and to our local community members who came together in such a powerful way. Your kindness helped meet immediate needs, ease stress for survivors, and remind families that they are not facing these challenges alone.
