Silkroad's Global Musician Workshop is a transformative musician-training and peace-building program that brings artists from around the world to Boston to train and perform together. Musicians are challenged to work across traditions, to co-create new musical works, and to develop skills that build increased cultural understanding. The public is invited to experience the musicians in action through an incredible concert festival that amplifies Silkroad's role in catalyzing peace through music.
Is cross-cultural collaboration still possible these days? Even amid globalization, musicians around the world often express feeling siloed from other artistic genres and traditions. Spaces for musical collaboration and training across cultures and pathways to relationships with global peers can be limited, and often comes at a high price. Silkroad provides an accessible space for over 70 musicians from diverse backgrounds to meet, learn, perform, and build peace and understanding through music.
Silkroad's Global Musician Workshop offers unique training in styles of music that represent a wide range of backgrounds and traditions through faculty-led bands, group workshops, topic-based elective classes, nightly jam sessions, and a multi-night Performance Festival. Participants learn from one another through the creative process and gain access to a network of peer musicians from around the world, launching new opportunities for collaboration throughout their professional careers.
GMW is a catalyst for innovation, transformation, peace, and celebration of culture. A shining example of this can be seen in the alumni musicians who created programs in their home countries in Africa to spread opportunities, hope, and training -- fostering community-led initiatives in areas where opportunities are few. Silkroad is currently organizing a growing network of training programs (such as its newest program in Hangzhou, China) to expand global impact and mobilize musicians for peace.
