The construction of this center will give 250 at-risk youth an opportunity to a better life. Through sports, academic support (Education) and personal development, these children will be encouraged to become agents of change in their community. This project is seeking to replicate DUNK's Nima Project where 89% of members have improved in Math and English; 88% of parents have noted positive change in their children's behavior. Members were crowned 2013 league champs (U13), 2014 LCS Champs.
Jamestown has a population of 80,000. 70% work in the informal sector due to lack of jobs. The average monthly income is $78. 56% of the population is under 24 years. The area is sadly characterized by high rate of teengane pregnancy, unemployment and illiteracy. Moreover, girls are also secluded and do not enjoy the same rights as the boys.
The Centre will ensure a secure location where children are given the priority to exercise their right to play, education, learn and grow. The playground would significantly increase the number of training sessions DUNK could offer, allowing more children to benefit from our activities and wider education programs. We know our program works from our activities with the Nima community. Help us support the Jamestown community in the same way.
This project will give 250 at-risk children a sporting ooportunity while shaping their character and minds through sports, education and leadership training so they may influence their peers and becomes agent of change.
