Greetings from The Odwar Fund! With funds from the April 2012 Global open challenge, we have done the following;
The Odwar Fund has Supplied over 50 chicken ( Poultry) to Bung Early Childhood Development center where there are 105 OVCs. The 50 chicken have a capacity of laying 2000 eggs in a year and 1,000 eggs will be eaten by the children as a nutrition supplement to boost their cognitive growth while 1000 will be hatched into chicks that will be kept for sale as a source of social economic security for OVC Households. Poultry is one quick way of getting OVC Households out of poverty since it has big multiplication rate and the sales value is at an all time high. The 105 OVCc at Bung ECDC now bring the total number of children supported by The Odwar Fund under ECD to 290 in kole District. The need to support more children remain immense. At the centers,we still have sevral challenges since most centers are in church buildings so both baby class,middle and top class children stay under the same roof and other church buildings are grass thatched. The other challenge is that these children need play materials to keep them active and these play kits are missing and require additionla finaces to buy them. It is interesting to note that the local media (Nwes paper) has reported this activities in the local language and the community is so impressed by the support.
An additional VSLA kit has also beeen provided to 30 OVC Households to underpin a savings culture. Through the Village Savings and Loans Association,the households are able to save money that can be used for small micro enterprises which will eventually help sustain the familly. These savings can be borrowed by members at low interest rates without any collateral security. This additional 30 members now bring the number of supported households to 120. These households are also being trained on kitchen gardening and production of nutritious crops like soya beans,high iron beans,orange flesh sweet potates among others including guiding them on commercial frming methods.
Still using the April 2012 Global Open challenge funds,we have been able to pay school fees for James Ekur,we have also supported othe existing students on our program. At the moment with the support being offered to James Ekur,the total number of students under dirrect financial support from The Odwar Fund stand at 39 and they are in different schools and Universities accross the country many of whom are Orphans and under privillaged students both as a result of Hiv/Aids,LRA war,physicall challenge among others
The Odwar Fund also supports a Vocational center and part of the funds will be put on buying equipments.
