The monies raised from Andrew's sponsored walk will help develop and maintain methods of preventing and alleviating suffering in children and adults living with this incurable, inherited disease. Sickle Cell affects millions of people worldwide and especially in Africa.
Without proper identification and medical care, children and adults living with Sickle Cell Disease can experience severe damage to their organs, such as the liver, kidney, lungs, heart and spleen. They are at extra risk of complications from strokes, acute chest syndrome and bone damage.
The Sierra Leone Sickle Cell Disease Society (SLSCDS) operates two clinics; providing essential care services (including maintenance treatment and hospital referrals), genetic counselling, health education and outreach services to schools. These services are vital to those living with Sickle Cell or people looking after those who do.
The SLSCDS' clinics treated over 5000 new patients in 2019. The project will help put in place the necessary infrastructure to continue to support current patients and increase the number of new patients they can identify and help.
