The rules, regulations and changes in medical protocols necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic have been addressed successfully by the Coaniquem staff. Because of travel restrictions, the treatment of many children had to be addressed through telemedicine. Instructions on wound dressing replacement and other procedures that could be done remotely were taught and monitored telemedicine. Cases that did need treatment at the Coaniquem hospital, such as surgeries, proceeded as usual, but the follow on care was accomplished in many cases by telemedicine.

The Lloyd Baysdorfer Memorial Fund, whose sole purpose is to fund the purchase of the revolutionary new laser treatment of scar tissues, is near its goal to raise $50,000. This new procedure utilizes lasers to keep scar tissue more soft and pliable by creating micro-perforations in the scar; and will promote healthy tissue around and beneath it. This will speed up the recovery of the child and the possibilities of reducing scarring. See the previous report in this series for more details.

In January of 2021 the COANIQUEM Burned Children Foundation mourned the loss of one of our most ardent supporter, and husband of long-time Treasurer Carolyn Schuetz.

Since our beginnings in 1998, Lloyd Baysdorfer was a champion for our cause and was always there to help on our fundraisers and to co-host gatherings with his beloved Carolyn at their home. He made some of the best cookies in the world!

In our previous email we announced that Lloyd's son Christoph had made a memorial donation of $10,000 in honor of his father. We are pleased to tell you that we are well on our way to doubling that contribution. Thank you to all of you who have supported this effort already. We are continuing our efforts to raise funds for this equipment!

COANIQUEM is extremely excited about this revolutionary new treatment for scar tissues. This new procedure will be used to keep scar tissue more soft and pliable by creating micro-perforations in the scar; and will promote healthy tissue around and beneath it. This will speed up the recovery of the child and the possibilities of reducing scarring are wonderful.

Our goal is to raise $50,000 towards purchasing the equipment  and we have raised $22,000 so far. If you would like to help us with this project, please donate through GlobalGiving today!

For 43 years, COANIQUEM has been treating and healing children who have been burned, many of them experiencing severe burn on their faces and necks. This treatment will be invaluable in treating these more challenging burns. These are the scars that people see first!

A tiny patient receives compression garments!
A tiny patient receives compression garments!

When he was an active child in Santiago, Chile, he ran into the family stove and tipped a pot of hot water on himself. He suffered severe burns on his arms and upper torso.

After emergency treatment at the local hospital, he was referred to COANIQUEM for rehabilitation. He underwent surgery for skin grafts and had physical therapy for five years. He and his family received psychological help over the course of these years. COANIQUEM's holistic approach helps the entire family deal with the long-term treatment of a burned child.

Fast forward 30 years. . .     He immigrated to the U.S. and is now a tech professional in California’s Silicon Valley. His company offered COANIQUEM as an option for employee charitable donations.  What a coincidence!

He made a significant contribution right away, then signed on for recurring monthly donations. He reported that he remembered the special treatment he received at COANIQUEM, and his mother still reminds him of the thoughtful care for the whole family. They even received some suggestions for improved safety in their home.

This is just one example of the comprehensive care received at COANIQUEM  -  and the long-term positive  effects on their patients. We hope you will continue to support the efforts of COANIQUEM in giving the burned children of the Americas a chance for a real life.

In order to meet the needs of young burn victims, Dr. Rojas-Zegers and his staff pioneered an approach called “integrated Healing” — a holistic program that includes:

Physical healing, including plastic surgery, scar compressionand rehabilitation using exercises and special devices.

Psychological treatment of trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders for both the children and the families.

Education provided to school aged children by trained teachers, at bedside when required by the extent of the treatment.

Spiritual support to help the children develop the inner strength and resolve necessary to deal with their injuries.

While children are being treated at the Rehabilitation Center, COANIQUEM provides teachers so that they do not fall behind in their studies. The children and their parents receive free room and board at Casabierta, one of the facilities of COANIQUEM.

In addition to medical services, COANIQUEM develops and circulates burn prevention literature. Also, in cooperation with government agencies and the private sector, COANIQUEM organizes and conducts campaigns to increase public awareness of fire hazards and burn prevention activities.

Aside from some government support for low income children from Chile, COANIQUEM depends on additional financial support from grants, corporate donations, and donations from gernerous individuals like you to provide free services for children from throughout the Americas.  Please help.

Santi is the Star of the Prevention Campaigns

Winston Churchill once said, "Never waste a good crisis."

The doctors and staff of the COANIQUEM Burn Centers in Chile are meeting the Covid-19 pandemic with creativity and energy.

Only the most urgent cases are being treated in the phiysical centers, with extreme precautions for both patient and staff.  These arrangements are more expensive than normal operations.

For the most of their services, COANIQUEM has created three "Gifts."

1.  Telemedicine.  -  Almost 80% of the chronic patients are "seen" by doctors who examine the progress of wounds and offer instructions to parents for appropriate home treatment.  They also mail compression garments when appropriate for stretching scars.

2.  Preventioin campaigns  -  They have created colorful and cheerful characters to alert children and families to the dangers for burns in the home.  Since most burns in young children occur in the home, these home-bound times are particularly crucial.  Materials have been distributed through media such as TV and newspapers.

3.   "Hot Line" assistance.  Staff nurses respond to inquiries through WhatsApp, offering home treatment options or referrals to emergency services when necessary.

COANIQUEM management has maintained the salaries of all staff and has involved most staff in these special activities.

However, with increased expenses and vastly reduced income, financial reserves are beinig depleted.

Can you help?  Please consider a generous donation.

You will be participating in the valuable response to this crisis.

Thank you!
