“…I am so happy that my family earn more daily income from raising chickens and ducks”
A quote from a fifty-six years old fathers at Krosangchar village
Mr. Bunthoeun is 56 years old. He is a Chenda’father who is a girl in a sponsorship program and she is studying at Kampuk Primary School. Mr. Bunthoeun has 10 children and his family lives in Krosangchar village, Sena Reach Otdam commune, Preah Sdach district. He is also a disabled soldier because his right leg was broken by mine during the Khmer Rouge and his family is very poor and the family does not have land for farming as other families. So that’s why his family got the poor card in level 2 from the local authority. Currently the family lives in a small house which was built by the Ministry of National Defence because before he was a soldier. Mr. Bunthoeun is a disabled person, so he could find a good job to support the family living conditions. Thus, his wife and children moved to find a job at Phnom Penh as a factory and construction worker.
Before his family had many challenges relating to living conditions and children's study support, as a disabled person, he could not earn more income to support the family and children’s study. Although he is a farmer, the family does not have land for farming. So sometimes the family did not provide enough food for the children to eat every day and his family also just earned a little money or income from raising chickens and ducks. At that time the family did have money to support daily living conditions and the children’s study such as school supplies and uniforms. As a result, most of his children dropped out of school at primary school level to find a job at Phnom Penh as construction and factory worker as they all had no skills and had low education. For raising chickens and ducks at that time, he could not run it smoothly and well because he did not have enough start-up capital to prepare a cage, buy animal feed and any techniques, so he could not raise chickens and ducks well. Most of his chickens and ducks did not grow well and some of them died every day and he lost a lot of money. Thus, he decided to stop raising chickens and ducks any more because he did not want to lose more money on it.
Fortunately, after Bunthoeun’s daughter and family were selected into the sponsorship program of Sunshine Cambodia Organization, the program provided his family food package as well as rice, fish sauce, soy sauce, and milk to children. In addition, the program also supported his daughter with school supplies or study’s materials every year such as bags, notebooks, pens, pencils and bard. All of this support is a big help and contribution to reduce some family’s expenses and his family also has money to save every day. The program not only provides his family food package, school supplies/study materials and hygiene materials, but the program also trained him on micro-enterprise-development and animal husbandry techniques, especially providing his family with start-up capital 200$ to run his small business too. The program team always encourages him to rethink his old business of raising chickens and ducks, then he decides to raise chickens and ducks as before. He said with a smile to the program team that “…after I joined the training on micro-enterprise-development and animal husbandry techniques, it all really improved me a lot on how to run a small business and how to raise chickens and ducks. I know how to prepare an animal cage, vaccination and how to use animal feed. Then I applied what I learnt into my business. I observed and noted that my chickens and ducks grow so fast and I could take their eggs and sell them to neighbors every day.” Mr. Bunthoeun also added happily “…now my family earns more daily income from selling chickens and ducks’ eggs every day. I have more money to support my daughter’s education and I have more time to take care of my daughter’s study and spend my time teaching her at home. My daughter also goes to school regularly with better school results.” Finally, he would like to say thank you to the program team and donors who always support his children’s study and his family’s living conditions.
