Stories of Change

“…I am so excited that I go back to school."

Romdoul was born on May 07th, 2009. Now he is 14 years old, and he lives with his parents in a small house with a zinc roof and zinc wall in Krosang Char village, Preah Sdach district. Currently Romdoul is studying at grade 8th of Krosang Char secondary school. Romdoul has two sisters Sreyleak and Sreylen. Romdoul is the youngest son in the family and his family has 6 members. Romdoul’s mother is a poor farmer, and his father is a construction worker and he mostly moved to work at Phnom Penh to earn extra income to support the family living because his family living condition is very difficult. Romdoul’s parents find it very hard to send him to school.

Before Romdoul was a shy and fearsome boy and he did not have courage and confidence in talking and speaking with friends, other people, even the teachers whom he learned with. He was nervous to talk, speak, play, and join any class and school activities and events. He dared not to raise any study issues with friends, teachers, and parents. He did not have courage to ask the teacher questions whenever he did not understand and catch up on the lessons well. He was a silent boy, and he did not have a good relationship with friends and teachers. At secondary school, he had conflict with the teachers and school principals, so that’s why he did not attend the school regularly. As a result, Romdoul’s study result was not good at that time and his parents also could not provide him with enough study materials such bag, notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, and uniforms. All these challenges and problems with the teachers and principal. At the end of 2022 and at the beginning 2023, Romdoul decided to drop out of school for five months and he just stayed at home and sometimes he went for a walk with his friends and other children in the villages. Romdoul’s parents advised and encouraged him to go back to school every day, but Romdoul did not listen and follow them.

Romdoul was selected into school development program on 13-July-2021.The program provided him and the family with study materials such as bag, notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, and home table and especially food packages as well as rice, noodles, soy sauce, fish sauce and sugar, etc. and water filter too. The program team not only provided these materials to him and family, but we also conducted school and family visiting regularly with him. During the visiting time we encouraged him to study hard both at school and home and we worked closely with principals and teachers to motivate him to be more confident and braver in the class and join any school activities and events. Particularly, when the program team knew that Romdoul dropped out of school for five months, we did not close Romdoul from the sponsorship program. However, program staff tried to meet four or five times with Romdoul and his parents at home and we explained him and his parents clearly about the importance of education for the future’s life and what the program can support him and family for the next step plan. The program team did our best to do follow up and encourage him to go back to school. As a result, Romdoul decided to go back to school. He has had many changes in his relationship and academic achievement, and now he has confidence to interact with his friends and the people around him. Romdoul said with smiling that "…now I dare to talk to my friends, teachers, and mother about any difficulties and study matter. And I’m so happy to go back to school. At school I dare to ask the questions to the teachers and my friend when I cannot understand, so my study result has improved from one day to one day…’’. Romdoul’s mother added "…now Romdoul’s study is better than before, and he attends the school regularly. Romdoul also study hard both at school and home after program team visited and encouraged my son…’’
