Project Overview:
The project is designed to assist children and youth, especially girls, from five urban poor communities in Phnom Penh to have self-confidence, to enjoy and to exercise their rights towards the moral and legal duty bearers. This project is also to assist their parents to take their full responsibilities for their family living conditions and their children’s studies.Besides, the project has engaged the participation of the legal duty bearers such as teachers, local authorities and Community Committee of Women and children in order to protect and prevent children from any kind of abuse and harm.
Through the project children and youth are equipped to be the active actors and leaders for their family and community. They are also prevented and protected from abuse, violence, and exploitation. Moreover, they have shown that they are improving from time to time. Actually, they accessed to education, received knowledge and skills. Some of our children/youth are studying at the university and some even get jobs. Some of our children/youth are studying at the university and some even get jobs. Apart from this, some families run a small business, while some of them bought some necessary stuff for their family’s needs.
Let's hear a story from a girl, Thavry!
“I want to be a teacher in the future. This is because I love this job and I want to teach.” – said by Thavry who is a 12-year-old girl and is studying at grade 5 in Tuol Sophea Khuon primary school. Thavry was selected into Sunshine Cambodia’s project in 2014.
Nowadays, she lives with her mother and her grandma at Prey Tea village, Phnom Penh. She has 3 brothers. Her mother is a factory worker. They moved from Battambong province and settled down in Phnom Penh in 2013, while her father is still living in their homeland. Her mother, therefore, has full responsibility for the family and has to work very hard every day for their daily food, renting a living room and children’s studies, etc.
Previously, Thavry was a quiet, shy and non-talkative girl. Actually, she was a not brave girl and did not like playing with other children. Her study was not good too. She also acknowledges these. “Last time, I dared not to raise my hand up in order to ask my teacher or to answer any question in class. I didn’t have many friends. Some friends looked down on me. This was because my studies’ result was not good,” she said.
However, Thavry is different now. She is a brave girl. She raises her hand to answer and ask her teacher in her class and children’s club. Moreover, she has many friends and likes playing with them. Interestingly, she became a good student. “Actually, I’ve tried very hard to study and go to school regularly. I get the first or the second place in my class mostly. Before some of my friends looked down on me, but now they value me. This is because I help and teach some of my friends who have poor studies result and do not understand the lessons well. This makes me happy, and now I have a very good relationship with all of my friends.” She said. When asking her about her dream for the future she continued that, “I hope when I finish my study my dream will come true. Actually, I want to be a teacher in the future. This is because I love this job and I want to teach.”
At home, Thavry is also a good girl. She helps her mother and grandma doing housework and always listen to their advice. Her house looks clean and they are healthy as well. When we visited her family her grandma told us that, “Thavry has grown a lot. She listens to my advice and helps us doing housework when she is free. She informs us whenever she goes out or goes to school. We are very happy to see her growing.”
Let's hear another story from a father of the children, Mr. Taing.
As many as people settled down in Phnom Penh for looking for a job, Mr. Taing, 53, and his family moved to Phnom Penh long ago. Nowadays, he is a Tuk-tuk driver and his wife is a chef. That time his family was in the great need. Moreover, his wife is sick mostly until now. This has been affected his family living condition and children’s study. For years, he couldn’t find a good job for he has very low knowledge. His family had gone through many challenges such as children study, daily food, accommodation and the sickness of wife, etc. That time he tried to look for a center for his children to study.
“My family has been supporting by Sunshine Cambodia, especially my children’s study. SC’s staff always encourage me and give ideas for improving my family living standard.” He said. Actually, they have gone through many difficulties and obstacles for improving their family living condition. He continued that “Our family has improved from time to time. I used to be a motor-taxi driver. I saved some money with a plan to buy a Tuk-Tuk. Later, I decided to lend the rest of the money from a bank to buy a Tuk-Tuk. This Tuk-Tuk helps me to make more daily income. Though my wife mostly gets sick, and we had to repay our debt monthly, I always saved little money with another plan. I wanted to have my own house. When I repaid all my debt that I lent to buy my Tuk-Tuk, I decided to lend the bank one again. This time was to build my house for I already have a small piece of land. Now we have our own house after so many years of saving and planning. However, I need to repay to the bank monthly.”
Through our visit to his house and a long dialogue with him, we learned that his family has much improvement regarding their living condition. Besides, we also learned that he has a strong commitment and support to his son studies. “I am happy to see my son, Kimhong, has tried hard to study and is reaching his life goal. I always ask him about his study and let him study without any disrupt. Moreover, I have an available room for him to study.”
Now his family is much better than before. His income is able to send his wife to the hospital and to buy medicine for her monthly. Moreover, he always spends some times to take care of his wife. Their relationship is stronger than before. They have time to talk and discuss with one another about their future plan and children study.
Thank you very much for yourntime to read and support us!
