“… I am very happy that I have got good study results now.”
Thina was born on February 24th, 2012, in Khlaeng Kong village, Sena Reach Otdam commune, Preah Sdach district. Now she is 12 years old, and she is studying in 5th grade at Kamrieng primary school. She lives with her parents. She has one sister, Raksmey, and two brothers, Raksa, and Thivorn. Thina is the third child in the family. Her family lives in her grandparents’ house with eight family members because her parents do not have their own house yet.
Thina shared the challenges and consequences of her studies during the last time. In general, she was always scared and did not have the confidence to talk and raise study problems or matters to my teachers and friends, especially when I did not understand and keep up with the lessons well in the class. She did not dare raise her hand to ask any questions to the teachers and friends because she was a shy and fearsome girl. She was about talking, speaking up and playing or joining any class and school activities or events. As a result, her study results were not good, and she got scores every month at that time. Her family also did not provide her with enough study materials, such as bags, notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, and a black whiteboard, due to the family financial crisis. In an interview with her friend, Sophen, on 21 May 2024, a friend said that" Yes, it is a real thing, friend, because Thina was always scared and did not have the confidence to talk and raise her study issues/matters to the teachers and friends. She did not dare raise her hand to ask any questions of the teachers whenever she didn’t understand and keep up with the lessons well. So, her study result was not good, she also got a low average score every month..."
Fortunately, in July 2021, her family was selected for the school development program of Sunshine Cambodia Organization. This program with her study materials such as notebooks, pens, pencils, bags, and rulers every academic year. The program also supported her family food packages such as rice, noodles, fish sauce, soy sauce, sugar and milk. This support really encouraged and made her so happy, and it was a good assistance to help and improve her studies and living conditions too. The program team not only provided these materials for her and her family, but we also conducted home visits with her family. During the visiting time, the program staff always talked and encouraged her to study hard both at school and home, and we worked closely with principals and teachers to motivate her to be more confident and braver in the class and attend any school activities and events. The staff also shared with her children’s rights/participation, children’s safeguarding and hygiene during the visit, and we encouraged the teachers to teach all students about these topics too.
Now she changes a lot in study results, courage and relationships and communication with friends and teachers at school. She shared with the program staff that “…now I have improved my confidence, courage and relationship with my friends and teachers. I dare to talk and raise up any issues related to my study matters in the class and I always ask my friends and teachers whenever I do not understand and keep up with the lessons well. So, now my study results are much better from one day to day and I passed my yearly exam. I always attend classes and school activities or events and play any sports activities with my friends...” According to interviewing with her teacher in June 2024 he mentioned with smiling that “…in the past Thina really did not have confidence and courage to talk and raise up any concern related to her study to me and her classmates. She did not have good relationships with friends and her study results also were not good at that time. However, now she has changed a lot after she was supported by the program. She has courage and confidence to raise any study concern/matters to me as well as her friends. Now she is ranked 4th in the class for the annual study results.”
