Sunshine Cambodia (SC) is working with 350 children from 240 families who live in five urban poor communities in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Through our project children were supported to attend formal education in both state and private schools. Moreover, they received school materials and extra tuition for extra courses such as English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Khmer and computer skills.
Besides, SC’s staff conduct the children’s, youth’s and parents’ club with various topics that relevant to their lives and families. The project’s staff work directly with both fathers and mothers by spending their time with them to do a home visit. Through this we have provided parenting skills, vocational and Micro Enterprise Development (MED) training, start-up capital, as well as emergency relief to those families.
We are encouraged to many boys, girls, youth and their family have shown they are improving. Actually, many of them have got knowledge and skills. Some are studying at university and some have jobs. Through our project we also see some families managed to run a small business and have jobs. Moreover, some of them bought some necessary stuff for their family’s needs.
Actually, there are many good things have happened in their lives. We see their smile, joy and the change of their attitude, behaviour, and life.
Here is a testimony of Sokheng, a 13 years old girl, who lives in Prey Tea village. She studies in Toul Sophea Khoun primary school and is in grade 6. She has 2 sisters and 1 brother; her parents are factory workers. She told us about her changes with smile that “last time, I did not know and understand about ‘child’s rights’. Then, in 2014, I was selected into SC’s program. Then, I attended children’s clubs, where I learned many good lessons such as the child’s rights, health and hygiene, and child abuse, etc. Now, I know and understand clearly about the 4 basics of child’s rights. I can talk at home with my parents or at school with my teachers if they abuse my rights. I dare to talk with my parents about the child’s rights. I also shared about this lesson, child’s rights, with my friends in class. Regarding hygiene, I always care for my personal hygiene. I, regularly, brush my teeth, take bath, wash my hands, and clean my clothes”.
