Kanha’s Journey of Perseverance and Hope

Born on September 4th, 2011, in Khvet Village, Theay Commune, Baphnom District, Kanha is a 14-year-old girl who embodies courage, determination, and hope. She is currently a 9th-grade student at her local secondary school, where she continues to pursue her dream of becoming a good teacher. Kanha comes from a poorest family of five children — one sister, Chakriya, and two brothers, Chantha and Vuthy. Her father passed away when she was very young, leaving her mother, an elderly woman, as the family’s sole provider. To make ends meet, her mother worked tirelessly as a farmer, and later, she moved to Phnom Penh to find employment as a factory worker.

Life was never easy for Kanha and her family. There were times when even daily meals were uncertain. When her mother went to work in the city, Kanha often stayed home alone, feeling scared and lonely at night. Sometimes, she sought refuge at neighbors’ or relatives’ homes for safety. Despite these hardships, Kanha’s determination to continue her education never wavered and she never gave up her education. Every day, Kanha woke up early to do household chores and cook meals before leaving for school. She then rode her bicycle 3–5 kilometers along a dusty, uneven road, often sharing the path with large vehicles. Yet, she never complained. For Kanha, education was more than just learning — it was the key to a better future.

At school, Kanha stood out as an exceptional student. She always sat in the front row, paid close attention, and asked questions whenever she didn’t understand something. Even after class, she studied diligently on her own, driven by her dream of becoming a teacher and supporting her family. One day, on the morning of an important exam, her mother called with heartbreaking news — she had no money to send Kanha to school that day. Despite this, Kanha refused to give up. With unwavering determination, she got on her bicycle and rode to school. Exhausted but resolute, she took the exam and gave her very best. When the results were announced, Kanha had passed with an excellent ranking. Overjoyed, she immediately shared the news with her mother, who was filled with pride.

Kanha’s journey through school has been filled with challenges — living alone, managing the household, and overcoming financial struggles. But with the loving encouragement of her mother, the support of School Development Program such as school supplies, bicycle, hygiene materials, water filter, food packages and encouragement from program staff, and her own determination, she has continued to thrive. Program’s support not only eased her family’s burden but also strengthened her hope and motivation to continue studying.

After years of perseverance, Kanha recently passed an important examination — a significant milestone in her life. Her success is a testament to her hard work and resilience, proving that education can truly transform lives. Today, Kanha is more than just a student; she is a role model for other children in her village. Her story inspires others to stay in school and to believe that with effort and hope, anything is possible. With her mother’s unwavering love, the support of program, and her own steadfast determination, Kanha’s future now shines brightly — a future full of opportunities, learning, and the promise of a better life.
