Agnes, an eager and dedicated student

Agnes is a Form 3 Student (High School Junior) at Taru Secondary School in Kenya. She is a member of the Kenya Keys’-sponsored SOS (Save Our Sisters) organization and works as an advocate and role model for younger girls in the region. She participates in handball, volleyball, and cross country. And she loves singing and dancing. Her dream is to work in the medical profession.

Agnes is the fifth-born daughter in a family of seven children. Her father is the Head Teacher at a local primary school. Her mother has an 8th grade education and works hard to care for her family. Her parents value education and have worked hard to keep all their children in school.

Agnes is a dedicated and hard-working student, but her parents have struggled to pay Agnes’ school fees because of the many expenses of providing for their large family and all the costs associated with their children’s education. Because of this, Agnes frequently misses school while she and her parents work to save enough money to pay her fees. Her absences have negatively impacted her grades and threatened her potential to graduate and qualify for college.

Fortunately for Agnes, she qualified for a sponsorship through Kenya Keys. Because of your donations, we were able to intervene and pay Agnes’ school fees. This will allow her to continue her education without any further interruptions. We’re not overstating things when we say that this sponsorship will change Agnes’ life forever. And it’s not only her life that will be changed. The rest of her family, her school and community, and her future children will all be positively impacted by Agnes’ education.

Thank you for your donations. On behalf of Agnes and so many of her peers, we express gratitude for your generosity. Without you, their dreams of education would never be achieved. When it comes to managing the sponsorship program at Kenya Keys, we have one recurring problem: we can’t say no. Our Kenya Keys Director in Kenya, Joseph Mwengea opens his front door nearly every morning to find students and parents who have walked 10+ miles to plead for sponsorships. They promise hard work and dedicated study. They promise their commitment to contribute in schools, libraries, clinics, and communities. They promise to “better their best,” if Kenya Keys will just give them a chance. Could you say no to that?

So, we say yes. Not to every single student, but to so many, enough to feel a tinge of fear that we won't really be able to support them all. But then we trust that great sponsors, like you, will be found, allowing these students to get the chance they deserve. Sometimes that means long hours of contacting individuals, following up on leads from previous events, and, quite frankly, a fair amount of pleading of our own.

But this report isn’t about a shortfall. It’s about abundance. Because of you. Even though we have recently taken on more students than usual, we have already provided sponsorships for every one of them. Because of you. That’s a great feeling, so we wanted to share it with you.

As you know, sponsoring students in Kenya changes lives — and not just theirs. If you know someone who might be interested in sponsoring a student, and changing lives in the process, tell them to visit kenyakeys.org

Asante sana!

Mariam and friends
Mariam and friends

Mariam was abandoned by her parents when she was just months old. Raised by her aunt and uncle, Mariam has worked very hard to excel in her studies, not only to secure a better future, but also as a way of expressing her gratitude to them for providing for her needs and encouraging her to go to school. Another reason for her dedicated efforts was that she knew she would need to qualify for a sponsorship from Kenya Keys to continue her education beyond 8th grade.

Mariam is just one example of a bright, dedicated, hard working Kenyan student who will do anything to get an education. The donations you make to the Kenya Keys sponsorship program help keep students like Mariam in school so they can improve their minds, seek better employment opportunities, and contribute to their families and communities.

Because of the generous donations we’ve received from you over the last few months, we will be able to help dozens of secondary school students stay in school without interruption until they have graduated. And they will go on to improve the lives of their families and others in the villages. Thank you for making a donation that will change so many lives.
