Bharathi Seva Mandali (R) Karkala started Special School in the academic year 2004-05 for rehabilitation of mentally and physically challenged children and named it as “Chethana Special School”. It gives us immense pleasure that our special school has successfully completed 16 years with your co-operation and valued support.
The Chethana Special School initially started with 16 mentally and physically challenged children with the whole hearted support of our well wishers Since 2011 our special school is having its own building in half an acre of land near Sri. Krishna Kshethra, Anekere, Karkala donated by Borkatte Hegde family. With the support of valued donors our school is now having 80 physically and mentally challenged children by providing free education. About 30 children are provided hostel facility. At present there are 10 specially trained teaching staff and 10 non teaching staff members working in the school.
There are 8 classrooms for the students under Pre-primary and Secondary divisions. After completion of Secondary division eligible students are given special training for appearing SSLC examination. We are pleased to inform that some of the students have already passed SSLC examination. Apart from this students who have completed 24 years of age are given necessary training in Yoga, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy , Music, Dance, Yakshagana, Physical education, Computer class, Tailoring class and Vocational training (Preparation of cloth bags, paper bags, artificial flowers, yakshagana face masks etc.)
Our school is spending about $ 85,000 every year for meeting various type of expenses such as providing education, food, transport, uniform, medical facility at free of cost and also for disbursement of salary to the staff members and to meet other maintenance expenditure. The receipt of grant from the Government Department is very meagre and major portion of the amount is to be received from the well wishers and donors.
Monthly Expenses:
Staff Salary - $ 3100
Transport & Vehicle Maintanance - $ 1285
Food Expenses - $ 1500
Electricals & Telephone Bill - $ 150
Medical Expenses - $ 285
Sports & Cultural - $ 70
Teaching Matirial - $ 140
Contingencies & other Maintanance - $ 285
Total $ 6825
For providing uniform we are spending $ 1100 per year for 80 students.
Average food expenses comes $ 50 per day for 80 students.
Average monthly expenses comes to $ 90 per child.
Average food expenses comes to $ 300 per year per child.
Some children reqired extra help to learn basic skills. they are:
1. Articulation & Phonological Problems.
2. Expressive or Receiptive
3. Stuttering Dysorthria
4. Audiology Rehabilitation
5. Learning disability
6. Alphasia
Our immediate requirement:

Audiology & other accessories $ 3500
Speech Therapist Salary $ 1500
Total $ 6500
