Centre for Special Education for students in South India

Report for the period January to March 2018:

The centre meats the rehabilitation and education needs of students with disabilities.

There are 165 students who are regular students who attend the  classes every day. Therapy, academics and co-curricular activities are a part of their schedule.

The academic classes continued with the third term curriculum.  The third term is always filled with fun and at the same time tension of year end assessment and final examination.

Sports Day Milan 2018: was conducted in January . As a precursor to the event  the centre held student elections for school pupil and house captains. This year it was a close win for the school people leader and it was a great learning for the staff to see the students putting in all efforts in creating manifesto and trying to win the elections.

 A variety of new adapted games were played in the sports day and competed with the first NCC March past by our students.

Regular physiotherapy occupational therapy  communication   speech and computer sessions were carried out.

We had a first level discussion on disaster risk reduction committee from TISS Mumbai and future workshops were planned which would evolve teams not only managing crises but also building up community support and group initiatives.

The month of February saw a high energy levels and team work from both students and staff . A spectacular and mind boggling, first ever kind of show was formed by our students in collaboration with  Graeae  theatre. The students, staff , volunteers and parents had a memorable life time experience of performing at 50 meters above the ground level. The self confidence of our students also took to those heights. 

Our NCC students also had a unique opportunity to be a part of the inviting team- Children Rotary Conference -Vannangal. The school annual day was celebrated with pomp and fun at ICF Railway Museum.

This provided a great learning experience for the students to understand the history of Indian Railways and the recycled metal sculpture .

Vidya Sagar always upholds the right to access information and technology of a  persons with disability . For many years the department of communication has been networking with other technology institutes to develop indigenous devices . This year we have taken a big leap and developed a access devices - Vinner and Vboss , which was launched in the month of March.

Apart from all this 30 students were preparing for the 10th and 12th standard exams through NIOS board. All the other classes including the pre- vocational classes had their year end assessment . The parents of all the students were invited for discussion regarding the goals for the coming year . The team of professionals included physiotherapist, occupational therapist,speech and communication therapists,special educators,team coordinators  sat with the parent to understand the need and also to set goals in all areas -academic, social emotional,  therapy, independence in daily living activities.  The goals were than shared with the parents as soft copy and wherever necessary in vernacular language as well.
