Summary

Operating our new mobile spay and neuter clinic, we aim to reduce the number of stray and suffering dogs and cats in the Bahamas through sterilization. Our goal is to perform 5,000 surgeries annually for the next two years. We will be concentrating on the main island of New Providence, with some smaller clinics on the family islands. We will also provide educational community outreach that focuses on responsible pet ownership for sustainable results.

Challenge

Approximately 20,000 stray dogs are in Nassau alone, plus about the same amount of cats. They roam seeking food, water and shelter, fighting over limited amounts of food and can suffer from painful diseases. Some are hit by cars and others are poisoned. The life of a street dog/cat is often one of pain and suffering. Thousands of animals are unnecessarily euthanized each year. The family islands do not have access to vets regularly. The one shelter in Nassau is constantly full and overwhelmed.

Solution

Trap-neuter-return (TNR) is promoted by the ASPCA and HSUS as the most humane and effective alternative to euthanasia for managing and animal over-populations. The mobile clinic can target specific areas that are in most need of assistance. The sterilizations will save thousands of helpless animals from being born into a life of suffering. Working together with local communities to educate about responsible pet ownership will foster a future that is more compassionate and conscious.

Long-Term Impact

Spay, Neuter & Education is the ONLY WAY to make an impactful and lasting change. One unaltered female dog and her subsequent offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years.*(peta) An unspayed female cat and their offspring, producing two litters per year, can produce well over 100,000 kittens in five years. Less stray animals also provide safer and healthier communities. Education will bring more compassionate behavior.
