Solar Panels Provide Energy Despite Gray Weather Conditions

By Dean Sinco | Project Leader

Since October last year, the country has been faced with a series of typhoons and heavy rains. Some may wonder if the solar panels of the University can still provide energy for the two campuses during these weather conditions.

In retrospect, Foundation University has ventured on the installation of solar panels three years ago and runs on 300k power off grid.

During normal sunny weather conditions the solar photovoltaic panels generate a good amount of energy per square meter due to its direct exposure to sunlight.

But it is also good to know from experts that during overcast and rainy conditions when clouds block the sun, the solar panels still produce energy and is said to perform better in cold temperatures.

Solar panels support both visible light and infrared light in order to produce usable energy. Even during gloomy and gray weather conditions when the sun is also not visible, the visible light gets through the rain and think clouds that cover the sky.

But all the more, the infrared light can get through more than the visible light due to the extended longevity of its wavelengths. This fact can be proven by the infrared telescopes used in viewing the distant galaxies and despite all the interstellar dust spanning the several light-years in between.

In fact, even if solar photovoltaic panels used ultraviolet light, it can still generate electricity during gloomy weather conditions.

Just recently, Typhoon Paolo and several other typhoons that followed hit the country from October until this present time. The storms and rainy weather conditions did not affect the operations of the solar panel project as it provides energy for both the main and north campus.

It can be recalled that in 2017, Foundation University ( FU) in Dumaguete City has become fully solar-powered, resulting in a more than 50 percent savings in its monthly electric bills.
