On Saturday, May 9, 2024, JPIIJPC kicked off the Yangani Secondary School Computer Lab Project with an inception meeting held at Yangani Secondary School premises. The heavy downpour notwithstanding, 8 persons were present at the inception meeting including the Headteacher, the Chairman of Parents Teachers Association (PTA), the Solar Energy technician, the building contractor and JPIIJPC project director and focal contact person in Yumbe.
After the brief introduction, the JPIIJPC project director gave an exposition of the project which aims to assist the refugee population through the provision of solar energy and computer equipment at Yangani Secondary School to strengthen the right to quality education, improve employability and reduce vulnerability to human trafficking of young people from Bidibidi Settlement. The members present proceeded to make a site survey of the premises to determine the best position to site the one room computer lab and allow the solar energy technician to assess the energy needs of the school and best placement for the solar energy devices. After the site survey, all moved back to the classroom where it was decided that the building contractor will move to site for the construction of computer lab at the designated place unless the PTA chairperson, who was tasked with consulting the masterplan of school, confirms that there has been a clash with an already planned structure.
The construction work commenced on the second week of May and was delayed in compliance with the new construction requirements and documentations from the District of Yumbe Construction Committee given that the government now prefers permanent structures in the refugee settlements. The construction has now resumed with substructure finished and walls about to be raised.
Yangani Secondary School will be the second school benefiting from JPIIJPC Solar for Peace Project at Bidibidi Refugee Settlement – a program that has already provided solar energy in 4 health centres (Twajiji, Igamara, Bolomoni and Yoyo) with ICT components and completed providing the first school (Twajiji Hope Primary School) with ICT on the educational segment of the program. Once the construction of the 7 by 6.6 centimetres computer lab is finished, the solar energy will be installed, the computer lab will be furnished and installed with computers and high-speed internet.
JPIIJPC envisages that empowering the young pupils with computer literacy and improving the lighting condition in the classrooms for after-school-hours studies, will among other things, enhance their learning and improve their competitiveness in the job market after schooling.
We remain grateful to GlobalGiving for hosting us in their portal. The Centre is now considering hiring professionals to assist us publicise the success stories of this JPIIJPC Solar for Peace Program to attract further financial support globally. We equally express our sincere gratitude to the Catholic Bishop of Arua for his constant support and especially for his availability whenever we call upon him for this and our Peacebuilding projects in the settlements. We are equally grateful to UNHCR, OPM and the lead partner in Education – Windle International.
We are confident that before the next report, Yangani Secondary School Computer Laboratory will have been commissioned and running.
Thanks, and remain blessed!
