On the 8th of April 2024, JPIIJPC completed and handed over the Twajiji Hope Computer Lab to the school administration.
The event was graced by the Bishop of Arua Diocese – Bishop Sabino Ocan Odoki, UNHCR and OPM representatives with LC1, RWCs, Health Centre representatives, Twajiji Hope Education Committee Members, Parents, and the pupils. After brief remarks from the dignitaries and the JPIIJPC project director, the bishop blessed and commissioned the newly constructed computer lab. By 12.35 hours, the brief ceremony came to an end, with words of appreciation and encouragement from the bishop to JPIIJPC and its partners, the school administration and pupils, UNHCR and OPM representatives, and the refugee community at large, with final blessings from the bishop.
This JPIIJPC computer lab project is part of the Solar for Peace Program at Bidibidi Refugee Settlement that has already provided solar energy in 4 health centres (Twajiji, Igamara, Bolomoni and Yoyo) with ICT components and has just completed the first school on the educational segment of the program. In this project, JPIIJPC, supported by partners constructed a computer classroom block of 7 by 6.6 centimetres in length and width and 3 centimetres height to the ceiling; installed 5 kilowatts of Solar Energy; furnished the computer room with air condition and fans, with fine cabinetry for the computers and monitors, padded seats and 2 instructor’s office chair and a table, backed with white board and markers; and installed 20 computers with high-speed internet.
With the completion of this project which commenced the construction phase last quarter of the year 2023, JPIIJPC has now taken the first steps towards digital empowerment of the refugee pupils to make them competitive with their peers elsewhere notwithstanding the challenges of schooling in a refugee environment. JPIIJPC aims at empowering the pupils at the Refugee Settlement schools with computer literacy to, among other things, improve their competitiveness in the job market after schooling.
We are quite grateful to GlobalGiving for hosting us in their portal. The Centre is still trying to get more volunteers to devote more time to publicise our success stories in the different social media platforms. We are appealing for volunteers in this regard so that more people will support JPIIJPC SOLAR FOR PEACE project at Bidibidi Refugee Settlement.
We express our sincere gratitude to the Catholic Bishop of Arua diocese especially for availing the time to come and inaugurate the very first computer lab built and equipped by JPIIJPC. We thank UNHCR and OPM for their unwavering support in bettering the milieu of the refugees and host communities. We cannot fail to mention our corporate partners – especially from Spain – who have thrown their lot with improving the lives of the refugees in Bidibidi. By the next report we hope to commence working on the computer literacy program for other schools at Bidibidi Refugee Settlement.
