In Malawi, cooking is mainly done with charcoal. We want to change that, because Malawi is largely deforested. We want to give the people in Chiuno Village, who live at subsistence level and without water and electricity supply, the opportunity to set up a solar box factory. This will enable them to provide for themselves and generate income. With your donation as start-up funding, production conditions will be created and materials and tools will be purchased.
There is no electricity in Chiuno Village, and daily power cuts in Kasungu, the district capital. People cook with charcoal, polluting the environment, and have cut down their forests for it over the years.
This project offers solar cookers for everyone. Initially, prototypes and demonstration devices will be produced to give the population the perspective that charcoal can be dispensed with. The community of Chiuno Village can produce solar boxes for their own use and finally for sale. In the long term, the project should refinance itself and develop into a permanent source of income. Environmental awareness is raised and parallel reforestation activities are supported and protected.
People living at the subsistence level and predominantly on subsistence farming are offered an independent livelihood security that is decoupled from the otherwise prevailing unemployment. Livelihood security is to be established according to sustainability and climate protection.
