Summary

Sindh Ajrak Welfare Trust proposes installing solar water pumps in drought-affected Thar villages. Solar PV panels power submersible pumps at boreholes/wells, providing free, clean drinking water using Thar's abundant year-round sunlight. This eliminates hours-long daily walks, expensive diesel fuel, and reliance on distant unsafe sources. Annual target: 50 pumps at PKR 500k each, benefiting up to 7,500 households yearly across Tharparkar and Umerkot districts.

Challenge

Thar's groundwater is deep and often brackish or saline, making it unsafe. Villages have no grid electricity. Families, mostly women and children, walk hours daily to distant wells. Diesel pumps are costly and frequently break down, leaving communities dry. This burden keeps girls out of school, exposes women to heat exhaustion and safety risks, and causes waterborne diseases in children and livestock, the region's primary economic asset.

Solution

Solar PV panels are installed above boreholes/wells, powering submersible pumps directly from sunlight, with no grid or diesel needed. Thar has over 300 sunny days yearly, ensuring reliable water. Water is pumped to an elevated tank and distributed via a community tap-stand near the village. A local Water Management Committee oversees maintenance and fair sharing. Durable components suit desert conditions, eliminating electricity and fuel costs.

Long-Term Impact

Health improves sharply with reduced waterborne diseases. Girls attend school regularly instead of collecting water. Women gain time for income-generating work. Livestock and kitchen gardens thrive with reliable water. Solar power eliminates diesel emissions, supporting climate resilience. Local Water Management Committees ensure long-term operation. The model is scalable to Thar's 2,300+ villages, promising lasting, widespread transformation.
