In 2019, Entrepreneurs du Monde launched a social microfinance programme in Sierra Leone called Munafa. It provides adapted financial and social services with capacity building for vulnerable entrepreneurs to develop sustainable income generating activities, enable self-reliance and improve standards of living. Today, Munafa runs 4 branches in Freetown's slums and has 3,498 beneficiaries. It targets the poorest communities and gives them access services and socio-economic services.

Challenge

In Sierra Leone, 70% of young people are unemployed or occupying an insecure job. A large number of people in precarious situations start a workshop, cultivate a field or raise livestock, but lack the financial resources and training to develop their activity : poor infrastructures, poor access to drinking water, exposure to erosion or land slides. The complexity of the situation has increased in 2020 due to covid. This campaign aims to help women like Adama to develop their business.

Solution

Munafa is a social microfinance institution that helps its recipients with two complementary offers: - Financial support carried out through individual loans, savings accounts and support in the management loans; - A training and follow-up component, with the creation of groups of entrepreneurs, the intervention of a facilitator on subjects such as management, sales, and even social issues. This support allows local entrepreneurs to develop and gain security for them and their families.

Long-Term Impact

During the following months, partnerships will be set up with local structures working on issues affecting beneficiaries. These partnerships, will help Munafa to provide a cross-functional support structure in the medium term and to better meet the needs of the entrepreneurs.Munafa's first rural branch is due to open in 2023, a market study is underway to decide on its location. A new agricultural loans is also in the process of being created, as well as 12 new training modules on agronomy.
