Update Report: Second Stage of the Recovery Program

Overview

Darfur Women Network completed the second stage of its livelihood recovery program for 27 families displaced from El Fasher. Most participating households are led by women who survived conflict, hunger, displacement, and the loss of their homes and livelihoods.

During the first stage, each beneficiary received 50% of a tailored financial or material support package to strengthen an existing small business or establish a viable livelihood activity.

Second-Stage Activities

DWN’s community-led field team visited all 27 beneficiaries to:

• Observe their businesses and confirm the appropriate use of the initial support.
• Assess progress, income-generating activities, and continuing challenges.
• Provide practical mentoring and business guidance.
• Discuss household needs and opportunities for business development.
• Determine eligibility for the remaining 50% of support.

The field team—led by a civil engineer and including a merchant, a displaced community representative, and two women professionals—confirmed that all 27 beneficiaries had used the first installment appropriately and demonstrated commitment to rebuilding their livelihoods. They therefore qualified to receive the remaining 50% of their approved support.

Initial Results

Beneficiaries strengthened small businesses that included selling tea and coffee, vegetables, prepared food, beverages, personal-care products, barbering services, small retail activities, and transport-related work. The assistance reduced their dependence on borrowing daily supplies and renting essential business equipment, allowing them to retain more income for food, education, housing, healthcare, and other household needs.

The second stage demonstrated that direct financial assistance, combined with field verification and mentoring, can help conflict survivors move from emergency dependence toward dignity, economic stability, and self-reliance.

Accountability and Protection

Beneficiaries signed receipts and provided consent for program documentation. DWN protected their identities by covering their faces in photographs and public communications because some participants may be witnesses or survivors of serious violence.

Next Steps

DWN will continue monitoring the 27 beneficiaries, provide mentoring when needed, complete arrangements for the three additional beneficiaries selected to bring the first cohort to 30 families, and document changes in income, household well-being, and business sustainability.

Future cohorts will include displaced survivors from different war-affected states and areas under RSF control. Selection will prioritize people displaced by the conflict who demonstrate a genuine willingness to rebuild their livelihoods and move toward self-reliance.
