Thanks to your commitment, the Consortium Congo Development (CCD) obtained some funds in January 2011 to begin implementing a Sanitation Education Campaign in the communities of Baraka, covering preventive measures to avoid diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever. The project aims to reduce cases of waterborne diseases and save hundreds of children in the little town of Baraka.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
· Educating children in schools
Accomplishment: Health and Sanitation Information Campaign sessions in 4 schools – 3 primary schools and 1 secondary school.
We held an information sessions in each school. We visited each school for two days, holding information sessions for different segments of students depending on their class levels. Overall, we reached approximately 224 children and 12 schoolteachers and administrators.
Next step: We will visit more schools where we will hold 6 final sessions in September. We intend to return to each school to assist the Health Brigades in preparing their own information campaigns at the beginning of the school year.
· Educating parents
Accomplishment: information sessions at a local health center and maternity
We organized one information sessions at the Baraka local health center and maternity, frequented mostly by mothers of children under 5 years old. Clearly described the suggested practice or method to avoid catching cholera or typhoid fever as well as the different steps to undertake in case of contamination through direct teaching and demonstrations 67 parents attended the session.
Next step: We are preparing to conduct four additional sessions in health centers and markets around Baraka markets as well as Baraka neighborhoods.
· Distributing cubes of soap and water treatment pills
Accomplishment: We distributed water 500 treatment pills to households, schools, and the health center and about 404 soaps to households, the local health center and schools.
Next step: We will continue our efforts to distribute the remaining more soap and remaining pills to more households in neighborhoods as we raise more funds.
