Sleeping Bag Update July 2026

By Kristin Lysko | Associate Director of Advancement

We are deeply grateful to our donors whose generosity has provided critical support to the people experiencing homelessness and housing instability who rely on our services. Winter in NYC was particularly challenging due to historically freezing temperatures. We continue to request sleeping bags throughout the year to ensure that no matter the weather event, New Yorkers have a safe and protected way to sleep.

To date, we have provided:

  • 25 sleeping bags to street homeless people throughout New York City
  • If we are unable to provide sleeping bags or blankets, we engage with people experiencing homelessness with health and agency resources, hygiene supplies, and snack bags.
  • No matter a person's situation, we ensure that every person feels safe, has human dignity, and has a place to go if they need support with housing, healthcare, or other needs.

We rely on the generosity of our donors, and we encourage you to donate to this campaign and provide a vital resource to our unhoused neighbors.

To illustrate the life-changing impact a single sleeping bag can have, a member of our outreach team shared this story from a recent interaction with a participant:

I encountered a man who was homeless and sleeping in the subways. He disclosed to the team that he had been homeless since November after his mother passed away. The landlord let him stay in his mother's house temporarily after her death, but he was eventually asked to leave the premises since he was not on the lease. The man had no where to go, and  he had apprehensions about going into a shelter because he felt that "it's safer outside."He was given a new sleeping bag to keep him warm and provided information on our organization and housing resources available to him. He was grateful for the kindness and assured the team he would visit our site for more support.
