Update on Sky Is The Limit during Coronavirus

The past four months have been difficult for all of us, in different ways in different circumstances. March brought a general lockdown in Uganda, with the borders closed and strict evening curfew from 7pm to 6am. To date, only 1,070 case of COVID-19 have been reported with no deaths. That is remarkable and positive news. For now.

However, the lockdown measures have had consequences for the Ugandan people. Businesses closed and very many people were without any form of income to support themselves and their children. There was no Government support for those who became unemployed. They have had to manage by themselves.

Sky Is The Limit school was closed in mid-March, children and teachers were all sent home. Rose Mugenyi made space for 45 orphaned or vulnerable children in her home, Noah's Ark. For those with HIV she has provided them with ARV medication that has to be bought from the hospital. They need special food supplements to protect their immune systems from opportunistic infections. Prices sky-rocketed and we were shocked to hear that a bar of soap cost £1 and one litre of antiseptic detergent cost £15!!

Ecologia organised a massive fundraising Appeal for Sky Is The Limit, to which many of you very generously contributed. The funds raised have got them through until now, feeding the children, buying them essential clothes and medication.

However, the school is not yet open and the teachers are struggling. Currently the 22 teachers have not received their salaries for the months of April, May, June and July. This adds up to £5,500. £1,379 per month. That is only £62 per teacher per month.

If schools do open in September they need additional £1,379 for August. And there is no guarantee that parents of children who normally pay school fees will be able to pay because of their own lockdown circumstances.

Ten dedicated teachers have been going to Noah’s Ark help the children with school work, and they came as volunteers. But there is no money to pay them. They need to feed their own children and have no means of support. If they are to be paid we need 3,180,000 UGX (£700) for each month they helped at Noah’s Ark.

These teachers are dedicated, committed to educating the children in their care and are becoming desperate. Catherine, one of our Trustees who was also a teacher once, has donated £500 as a starting point to help the teachers. We hope that others who value the teachers will also contribute. Give a Little to Help Children in Uganda

The prevalence of Coronavirus is spreading across Africa. Although Coronavirus is in its early stages in Uganda, all flights have been cancelled in and out of Entebbe, and Ugandan citizens have been told to stay at home. Sky Is The Limit Children’s Centre and School is vulnerable as it has limited resources and a high number of children are living with HIV/AIDS.

Sky is the Limit not only provides a good quality Primary education to 370 disadvantaged children in rural Fort Portal, but it also provides a safe and loving home at Noah’s Ark, Director Rose Mugenyi’s home, for 30 children, orphaned because of HIV/Aids.

These children need to be kept safe from Coronavirus. If they were to become infected with the COVID-19 strain, they would be at great risk as their immune systems are too compromised to fight illness the way healthy people can. Sky Is The Limit is in a very rural area, and it can be difficult to go out and buy provisions, especially in heavy rains. With you, we can make sure that they have enough food and hygiene products stored in case they go on lockdown. We need to make sure that Sky Is The Limit has enough food, soap and disinfectant so that they can survive.

Over the years, you’ve made it possible for the school to flourish. Because of you, we’ve built three new classrooms, a kitchen and dining hall, and provided school equipment. You have helped to provide a daily meal for each child ever since 2014. But most importantly, you have given these children hope and a chance to have a better, brighter future.

At Ecologia, we are adapting to this uncertain time and rising to the challenge of continuing the fight for a world without poverty. But we need your help to achieve this, now more than ever.

It is uncertain time for us all. But you will be a life-saving hero to these children if you donate what you can today.

£5 will ensure that one child at Sky Is The Limit will have enough food for 1 month.

£1 will give 5 children a bar of soap to last them 1 month

Please, help us to give them the nutrition they need to fight illness. To give them soap and the ability to stay clean and stay safe and stop the spread of Coronavirus in Uganda.
