Pair training of refugees in Kalemie to operate vehicles repair as a livelihood activity
As we came and started working in Kalemie City, Tanganyika Province focusing on forced migrants’ issues, we realized that at 80% of those who repair vehicles are refugees generally from Burundi. They do train and initiate themselves one by one and then they are deployed in various Garages.
This helps them to earn a living and respond positively to their needs and at the same time become self-reliant and this could be viewed as a role model in refugee integration in the Democratic Republic of Congo when debate about refugee protection comes up.
However refugee mechanics are confronted to two major challenges which we are trying to solve. The first is that they are not united in a group and refugees are not organized in association and community which could have helped them to channel others especially the neediest in order to access training opportunities. We have now helped them to think about an Association and the idea is moving very well where they have started meeting.
The lack of their own managed Garages: We realized that because they do not have information on how to register a Company and because of the high discrimination because of the ignorance of so many government and other stakeholders on issues about refugees, it is difficult for refugees to register their initiatives. We have also started working on this challenge by first of all building the capacity of refugees to really understand the laws, their rights and duties and at the same time their limits. At least every week we are having an information session with them and then after three months we shall come up with engagement with other stakeholders.
So far, we are very proud to share information that since March up to now we have worked with the Migration Department and now cases of arresting refugees who have their refugee identification cards has reduced and it is going to finish because most of the Migration Officers are fully aware about refugee documents.
Most of our work is highly affected because we do not have the necessary funds which can help us to offer services to people, carry a research in order to get the right information and set up an advocacy approach. We continue calling upon your kindness and generosity to support our work and donate towards our activities.
