Dear GlobalGiving Community,

Warm greetings from Face Up Generation Aid Organization (FUGAO).

We are honored to share our latest progress report for the project "Shield the Innocent: Protecting Ethiopia's Girls." Through this initiative, FUGAO continues to protect vulnerable girls from violence, abuse, exploitation, harmful traditional practices, and neglect by providing child protection services, education support, psychosocial care, and community awareness programs.

Across many communities in Ethiopia, girls continue to face significant risks that threaten their safety, education, health, and future opportunities. With the generous support of GlobalGiving donors, we are helping girls live in safer environments where they can learn, grow, and realize their full potential.

During this reporting period, meaningful progress has been achieved through strong collaboration with families, schools, community leaders, and government child protection structures.

Early Impact & Beneficiary Story

Restoring Hope Through Protection

A 14-year-old girl from Oromia Region shared:

"I was afraid to continue school because of the challenges I faced. Through FUGAO's support, counseling, and encouragement, I returned to school and now feel safe and confident about my future."

Her story reflects the resilience of many girls who, with timely protection and community support, are rebuilding their confidence and pursuing their education.

The project has contributed to several positive outcomes:

  • Increased school attendance and retention among supported girls.
  • Improved emotional well-being and self-confidence.
  • Greater awareness among families about child protection and girls' rights.
  • Increased reporting of child protection concerns through community referral mechanisms.
  • Stronger collaboration between schools, families, and protection service providers.
  • Reduced acceptance of harmful traditional practices in target communities.
  • Increased participation of girls in school and community leadership activities.

Community Participation

Community engagement remains central to project implementation.

Key community contributions included:

  • Parents actively participated in awareness sessions and family support activities.

  • Beneficiaries and caregivers participated in project monitoring and feedback mechanisms.

This collaborative approach promotes sustainability, accountability, and long-term community ownership.

Challenges Encountered

  • Economic hardship increased the vulnerability of many girls and their families.
  • Harmful traditional practices continue in some remote communities.
  • Demand for child protection services exceeded available resources.
  • Limited transportation affected follow-up visits in remote areas.
  • Some survivors required long-term psychosocial and legal support.

  • Expanded community awareness and prevention campaigns.
  • Strengthened collaboration with local child protection actors.
  • Increased psychosocial support and case management services.
  • Improved referral pathways with schools, health facilities, and government institutions.
  • Continued mobilizing additional resources to reach more vulnerable girls.

Monitoring & Accountability

FUGAO maintains robust monitoring and accountability mechanisms through:

  • Regular household and school follow-up visits.
  • Individual case management and documentation.
  • Child safeguarding monitoring systems.
