Shield the Innocent - Protecting Ethiopia's Girls

By Riste Zenebe | Finance Manager

Dear GlobalGiving Community,

Warm greetings from Face Up Generation Aid Organization (FUGAO).

We are pleased to share our latest progress report for the project, “Shield the Innocent – Protecting Ethiopia's Girls (#73348)”. This initiative is dedicated to safeguarding vulnerable girls from abuse, exploitation, and harmful practices, while promoting their rights, dignity, and well-being across communities in Ethiopia.

In a context where many girls face risks of violence, neglect, and limited protection systems, this project serves as a critical intervention—ensuring that girls are not only protected but also empowered to thrive in safe and supportive environments.

Project Overview

Over the past quarter, the project has focused on prevention, protection, awareness, and strengthening community-based child safeguarding systems.

Our mission is clear:
to protect girls from harm, empower them with knowledge and confidence, and mobilize communities to create safe and nurturing environments.

Progress So Far (January – March 2026)

The project has been implemented in Addis Ababa and selected surrounding communities, reaching:

  • Vulnerable girls and adolescents
  • Parents and caregivers
  • Teachers and school leaders
  • Community, faith, and youth leaders

Through awareness campaigns, training, school engagement, and protection initiatives, we are strengthening safety systems for girls.

  • Identified and supported 95 at-risk girls through case management and follow-up
  • Established 4 community-based child protection committees
  • Strengthened referral systems for reporting and responding to abuse cases

2. Awareness & Prevention

  • Conducted 12 awareness sessions reaching over 600 community members
  • Delivered school-based sessions on child rights, personal safety, and reporting mechanisms
  • Engaged parents in discussions on child protection and positive parenting

3. Capacity Building

  • Trained 70 community and faith leaders on child safeguarding and protection frameworks
  • Equipped teachers and volunteers with skills to identify and respond to risks
  • Promoted child-friendly communication and safe reporting channels

4. Girls Empowerment & Life Skills

  • Trained 140 girls in life skills, self-protection, and confidence building
  • Established safe spaces and girls’ clubs for peer learning and support
  • Encouraged girls to speak up, report abuse, and support one another

Early Impact & Stories of Change

Finding Safety – Addis Ababa
A 14-year-old girl at risk of early exploitation was identified through community outreach and connected to support services. Today, she is back in school and actively participating in a girls’ club.

Changing Mindsets – Community Engagement
Parents who previously avoided discussions about child protection are now actively engaged in safeguarding efforts and monitoring children’s safety.

Confidence and Courage – Girls’ Voices
Girls participating in life skills training are demonstrating increased confidence, awareness, and willingness to report unsafe situations.

Challenges Encountered

Despite meaningful progress, we encountered several challenges:

  • Deep-rooted cultural norms discouraging open discussion
  • Limited child protection infrastructure in some areas
  • Economic hardship increasing vulnerability among families
  • Growing demand for services beyond current capacity

Through collaboration and adaptive programming, we continue to address these challenges.

What’s Next? (April – June 2026)

In the coming months, FUGAO plans to:

  • Expand protection services to reach 150 additional girls
  • Establish more community child protection committees
  • Strengthen school-based safeguarding programs
  • Train 100 additional stakeholders (teachers, leaders, volunteers)
  • Scale up girls’ empowerment and life skills initiatives
  • Enhance coordination with legal and social service providers

Sustainability & Long-Term Vision

This project is designed for sustainable impact by:

  • Strengthening community ownership of child protection
  • Building local capacity and accountability systems
  • Empowering girls as active agents of change
  • Promoting long-term behavioral and cultural transformation
  • Establishing durable partnerships with institutions

By 2030, FUGAO aims to contribute to a safer Ethiopia where every girl is protected, valued, and empowered.
